In this assignment, you will compare two cities based on publicly available statistical information from StatsCan (Conduct some basic analysis using the data that can be found online here: https://www12.statcan.gc.ca/census-recensement/2016/dp-pd/dt-td/index-eng.cfm )and increase your competency in assessing numerical data through analysis and evaluation. Every 5 years, the federal government conducts a census of the population of Canada. Analysis of the data collected helps paint a portrait of the people who live in our country, our cities, our neighbourhhoods and more. You will compare two Canadian Census Metropolitan Areas (CMA) from this list, ( https://www150.statcan.gc.ca/t1/tbl1/en/tv.action?pid=1710013501 )conduct some basic analysis using the data that can be found here. You are strongly advised to speak to a librarian from the Map and Data Library to develop an understanding of utilizing this material. Two workshops will be held in October, noted below.
Please do the following:
1. Choose a theme that you would like to focus your comparison on. This theme needs to allow you to identify similarities and differences between the two cities.
2. Select 6 pieces of data or statistics that you’d like to use in comparing your two cities. Total population is not acceptable as one of the 6 data pieces, but the City’s ranking in terms of total population by country is acceptable. Make sure you can collect the same data pieces for both cities and try to focus the data in relation to your selected theme. 3. Present the data in a clear, focused format (perhaps in a table or some other form of data visualization) with a written description to support the data
4. Write a 750-word analysis (word count does not include references) of your two cities that includes the following: a. Your theme b. Key findings c. Similarities and differences between the cities d. Analysis and discussion of the similarities and differences and why they might exist e. A conclusion 5. Reference all of your sources (both in-text and in a bibliography) using APA formatting Comparing Cities will be graded according to the following criteria: • 10% Format and Presentation: spelling / grammar / adheres to length / clarity • 40% Data: appropriateness of comparison and of data selected, accuracy, clear and clean presentation of data, sources provided and listed in APA format • 50% Analysis: Follows guidelines and format as per above, clearly written, demonstrates comprehension of material, effective discussion that highlights data, similarities and differences, changes over time, and demonstration of analysis of data, references data properly using APA format.
