Homework 7

Two-Group Between Subjects Design

When submitting this file, be sure the filename includes your full name, course and section. Example:  HW7_JohnDoe_510B01

Be sure you have reviewed this module/week’s lesson and presentations along with the practice data analysisbefore proceeding to the homework exercises. Complete all analyses in SPSS, then copy and paste your output and graphs into your homework document file. Answer any written questions (such as the text-based questions or the APA Participants section) in the appropriate place within the same file.

Everything is worth 2 points unless otherwise stated.

  Part I: General Concepts

These questions are based on the concepts covered in this week’s assigned readings and presentations.

Fill in the highlighted blanks with the best word or words.
1) Different people serve in the control and experimental groups in aANSWERdesign.
2) Which threat to internal validity best accounts for having a large natural disaster unexpectedly affecting the majority of participants during a study?

ANSWER

3) Which threat to internal validity best describes natural cognitive development over the course of the study being responsible for the results?

ANSWER

4) In experimental design, the manipulated variable is the ANSWER variable.
5) AANSWERreplication tests the same concepts using different methods, manipulations, or measures.
6) Random ANSWER helps one obtain a sample that is representative of the population and random ANSWERensures the two groups are as equivalent as possible.
7) The ANSWERestimates how large a role the independent variable has on the dependent variable, regardless of sample size.
  8) A study must have ANSWERvalidity for the results to be meaningful, and ANSWERvalidity to ensure results can be generalized.

Scenario A: An experimental study was used to examine whether time of daily announcements impact worker productivity. A factory with two facilities with similar worker productivity percentages participated in the study. One facility did daily announcements at the start of each shift; the other facility did daily announcements an hour before the end of a shift. Worker productivity percentages were compared between the two facilities.

Use this scenario to answer the following question.

9) What is the independent variable? Answer:
10) What is the dependent variable? Answer:
11) What is the null hypothesis? Answer:
12) What is the alternative/research hypothesis? Answer:
13) If they reported t (30) = 1.95, using your Appendix, what is tcv? Answer:
  14) What should the researcher conclude about the null hypothesis? (Fail to reject or reject?) Answer:

  Part II: SPSS Application

These questions require the use of SPSS. Remember you must submit all of your work within this word document. You will need to take a screen shot of your data view if necessary, or copy and paste your output into the spaces below. Remember to report the exact p value provided by SPSS output – simply reporting p<.05 or p>.05 is not acceptable (unless SPSS output states p=.000 – in that case you can report p<.001).

Research Scenario:A developmental psychologist wants to study the effect of instructional type on recall of the alphabet. She randomly selects a sample of 20 students at the local preschool and assigns them to two groups, an “Individual” group who recites and practices the alphabet on their own using personal learning devices (n=10) and a “Group” group who studies the alphabet together (n=10). After one week of daily 30 minute sessions, all of the children are asked to recite the alphabet. The number of correctly recalled letters for each group are presented below. Create your SPSS data file (remember that there will be a “grouping variable” for instructional type and your second variable, or column, entered into SPSS will be your dependent variable, recall. Look at the example file from this week’s presentation if you want a visual reminder). Conduct an independent-samplest test to determine whether the instructional types resulted in a difference in recall of the alphabet. (14 pts)

17) Calculate the effect size given the SPSS output as shown in this week’s presentation. Show all of your work. (2 pts)
Work and Answer:

18) Write an APA-style Results section based on your analyses. Remember to use complete sentences, include the statistical notation, and include a decision about the null hypothesis. If the results are significant, include the effect size and its interpretation as well. (4 pts)

  Part III: Cumulative

These questions can be related to anything covered thus far in the course.

21) In SPSS, what should you first click on (from the menu bar) to obtain descriptive statistics? ANSWER
22) If a researcher concludes that their intervention had an effect when in fact it did not, they make aANSWERerror.
23) ANSWERis considered by many to be the most important type of validity as it assesses the extent to which an instrument accurately measures what it is designed to measure.

Research Scenario:Is high school GPA a strong predictor of college GPA? NOTE: predictive requires a different test than merely one asking for a relationship or a difference. There is only one right answer! Given this information, choose the correct test to analyze this question, set up the SPSS file, and run the analysis. (10 pts)
