Essay Subject
Wuthering Heights – Name of the Book
Select one of the following five topics:
1. The 1939 movie adaptation of Wuthering Heights ends with the deaths of Catherine and Heathcliff, leaving out the events of the second part of the novel. Do you think the second part of the novel is necessary? If not, why not? If so, in what ways does it develop the characters and/or expand the themes of the first part?
2. What if Catherine Earnshaw had married Heathcliff instead of Edgar Linton? What do you imagine their lives would have been like? Do you think they would have found happiness? Why or why not? Make sure your answer is based on specific clues you find in the novel. (You should also consider the events of the second part of the novel.)
3. Nelly is an observer, interpreter, and participant in the story. How would you characterize her? How reliable is she as a narrator?
4. Heathcliff is cruel and violent, yet we see many of his characteristics in the heroes (or anti-heroes) of later novels and popular culture. What makes Heathcliff attractive to audiences? What is your own reaction to the character and his appeal? If you like, you may include examples of a Heathcliff-like character or characters in literature or media.
5. Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange can be said to represent two kinds of personalities. What are the strengths and limitations of each, and how are they reflected in the settings? Is one personality more likely to be successful in life than the other? Why?
