Design Project – Home CPAP Machine

Fall 2019

Positive airway pressure (PAP) is a mode of respiratory ventilation used in the treatment of sleep apnea. PAP ventilation is also commonly used for those who are critically ill in hospitals with respiratory failure, in newborn infants (neonates), and for the prevention and treatment of atelectasis in patients with difficulty taking deep breaths. In these patients, PAP ventilation can prevent the need for tracheal intubation, or allow earlier extubation. Sometimes patients with neuromuscular diseases use this variety of ventilation as well. CPAP is an acronym for “continuous positive airway pressure“, which was developed by Dr. George Gregory and colleagues in the neonatal intensive care unit at the University of California, San Francisco.[1] A variation of the PAP system was developed by Professor Colin Sullivan at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney, Australia, in 1981.[2]

You are the lead design engineer on a new model of CPAP machine.  This machine will be a “use at home” model for sufferers of sleep apnea. You have been tasked with coming up with a plan to implement the design of the new machine as well as setting up the project to manage and come up with a master schedule.

The project will be broken into three parts:

Part 1 due NOV 4, 2019

Part 2 due DEC 2, 2019

Final Project with Corrections due DEC 9, 2019

Deliverables for your design:

Concept of Operations (Con-Ops)

Top Level Requirements Definition

Detailed Requirements for one Part of the Design

Work Breakdown Structure for detailed requirements

Master Schedule from project inception to delivery (including Gant Chart)

Basic Costing

Please note that this is a lot of work and take advantage of all of the time that you have.  Waiting until the last minute will only make things more difficult for you to complete.

Part 1 Deliverables:

Draft of Con Ops

Work Breakdown Structure

Draft of Top Level Requirements

Part 2 Deliverables:

Draft of Detailed Requirements

Schedule

Costing

Complete design report in a format that would be delivered to a customer or your employer.  It should include all of the above listed deliverables as well as any additional documentation or supporting research that you used to come up with the solution.

Resources you should use:

The INCOSE website that I directed you to previously. This will be very valuable for helping you design your con-ops and your requirements.

Your book has excellent resources for developing the products listed above.

If you wish to collaborate on this with your peers, feel free. I do expect that you turn in your own work though, so remember to keep your deliverables independent.

The Final Report should have the following:

  • Intro
  • Background
  • Methodology
  • Requirements
  • Con-Ops
  • W.B.S
  • Schedule
  • Cost
  • Conclusion/Lessons Learned
