Madagascar in WW2
Paper details:
For this research paper, you will need to focus on a particular time and place in African history. You may focus on the more well-known “hotspots” such as decolonized Kenya, the Zulu wars of the nineteenth century, or the Atlantic slave trade of the seventeenth century, for example. There will be more sources out there on these topics. However, some of the most creative, interesting, and innovative work continues to be done on other lesser-known periods and places, such as pre-modern Saharan communities, homosexuals in Muslim northern Africa, and Madagascar in World War II, for example. The important thing to remember is that this is your paper and this is your chance to choose a topic you would like to research. Hopefully, the diverse nature of this topics course has already suggested many possibilities.
Another important component of this paper is the thesis. The thesis should be an idea or topic that can be used throughout the work. It is an intellectual tool. So, instead of simply reading scholarship that describes, for instance, the role of diasporic Indian communities in Apartheid-era South Africa and to reiterate that basic data in your paper, you would focus on the post-Enlightenment Eurocriteria for racial categories and the sovereignty, authority, and legitimacy of the nation-state to reinforce those categories. Therefore, you are thinking and writing more three-dimensionally, if you will.
You may also use this thesis to critique something historically. So, for instance, if you wanted to write biographically about Jomo Kenyatta, you could use a feminist perspective to demonstrate his patriarchal attitudes. That makes a more sophisticated and original research paper. And, by the way, you are by no means restricted to a thesis presented in this course, either. You could use ideas such as developmental psychology, educational philosophy, just war theory, or speech act theory, for example. Some of the most unique works are those that radically juxtapose an idea and history in a way that have not typically been used together such as kinesthetic performance and the war for Algerian independence. There is a world of possibilities in store for you. The second most important thing to remember is that developing a creative and interesting thesis is the key to an effective paper.
