Answer the questions below in the form of a single essay.
How can you explain the brutality of World War 1? In your opinion, should we
regard soldiers as victims or as perpetrators of violence? Discuss.
Word count: 800-950.
Format and guidelines:
• All papers must be double-spaced, have one-inch margins top/bottom, left/right and be 12
point font.
• Please include a title page that has your name and date, TA’s name, section time, word
count, and a title for the paper. Capture your argument or focus with the title.
• All papers need to include footnotes or endnotes, Chicago style. Please ask any questions
about this to your TA.
• Introduction: it is the most significant section of the essay. It needs to include your
argument and how you will prove that argument.
• The body of the paper needs to include specific examples from the lectures and readings,
and your analysis of those examples. A good paragraph has a minimum of three
sentences, and often much more. Each paragraph should develop one key idea. Be sure
to think about the transitions between paragraphs. This is the architecture of the paper.
• Papers will be marked down if they are shorter than 800 words or longer than 950 words.
• You must employ information from lectures, the readings and the textbook, and you can –
but are not required to – refer to videos posted on the History 4C Gauchospace Page.
• There will be a zero-tolerance policy for plagiarism. A plagiarized paper will result in an
F on the assignment and a report to the Office of Student Conduct for academic
dishonesty.
• Late papers: if, for any reason, you cannot submit your paper on time, please contact your
TA and ask for an extension.
