The University of Northampton markets itself toward International Students (University Of Northampton, 2017). The Universities’ emphasis on cultural events and inclusion will be supported by an event which encourages diversity & inclusion. This will provide fulfilment for existing students, whilst serving as a marketing feature in future University of Northampton media. This section of the Business Case is of importance as it allows for confirmation regarding; Justification on starting the Project (Promote Diversity & Inclusion) and clear definitions regarding Scope (Performer Specification & Guests Facilities). These points are imperative in understanding and fulfilling the needs of the ‘Project Start Up Process’ (Axelos, 2017. Page: 166). Other key objectives such as ensuring all necessary authorities exist & defining evaluative measures of the final deliverable can also be realised in the project start up process.
Business Options:
The following section details summarisation on the recommended business option accompanied with merits, drawbacks, timeline for delivery & benefits. This option operates within the scope of ‘Do Something’. Exclusion of ‘Do Nothing/Do The Minimum’ ideology will also be referenced. This section operates in line with what is recommended for the ‘Business Option’ case within Prince2 literature. (Barker, 2013). The current option consists of the prior mentioned deliverables. The primary merit of this project is the opening of intercultural dialogue which can be positively achieved via the approach detailed within this project. (Singh, 2010). The primary drawback is the potential for accidental under-representation of specific backgrounds leading to feelings of alienation. This can be mitigated via Analysis of Student Intake Records. Project delivery will be realised within the final week of term, immediately before Christmas break. Benefits of the project will be immediate for Students. Benefits regarding perception of the University will take longer to achieve as the flow of information to external parties may not be immediate. Excluded options align themselves with ‘Do Nothing’/’Do the Minimal’ ideology. Doing Nothing can result in obstructed progress regarding encouraging diversity and inclusion. Doing the Minimal can result in poor planning of the project and ultimately lead to incorrect representation, coupled with an insensitive approach to minority groups.
Expected Benefits:
The ultimate objective of this project is to promote Diversity & Inclusion within the University of Northampton. As this is stated to be constructed via a cultural perspective it is understandable that an expected benefit be the integration and celebration of the variety of cultures that embody the University of Northampton. Benefits of this outcome are detailed below. Within the Qualitative/Quantitative columns; green indicates existence of a correct statement whereas red indicates non-existence.
The above statements integrate within the Universities Strategy of International Recruitment as they support a cultural inclusive environment. Prior to the project’s completion tolerances will be set as to what is a successful outcome regarding the Questionnaires/Interviews.
Expected Disbenefits:
Expected Dis-Benefits include; disruption to students studying within University grounds and those living on campus. The impact of these disruptions can be mitigated via advertisement of the event as far in advance as possible. This allows students the opportunity to return home for the Christmas break sooner as the event occurs on the final week of term. This is exemplative of a Disbenefit as opposed to a Risk. This is due to risk being defined as possessing uncertainty of actual occurrence; (Axelos, 2017) whereas we can be sure this event will provide disruption to normal student life to a certain extent. The prior stated disbenefit mitigation strategy exists to minimize negative impact of the project. This mitigation strategy operates within both quality planning and quality control disciplines (Barker, 2013) of the Prince2 framework.
Timescale:
The project will run until completion of the event. Benefits of the project will be realised immediately for Students/Staff attending the event and measured upon completion of Interviews/Questionnaires. Benefits for the institution will not be realised until further intake groups begin at the University of Northampton. The entirety of the Project Plan (especially lessons learnt) must be kept and disseminated to younger groups of students if the University of Northampton wishes to effectively further embed itself in multicultural ideology.
