CDECE48: The Young Child in the Family and Community

“Combined Assignment”

 

Purpose: The ‘combined assignment’ was created to provide students with the opportunity to explore two of the major themes in our course; preschool environments and parent engagement.  (Due to the current Covid-19 social distancing restrictions it is not possible to complete the preschool observation or parent interview so this assignment is a replacement for those two assignments)

 

Skills: This assignment will give the student the opportunity to practice critical thinking, writing and reflection.

 

Knowledge: Students will explore information related to environments and family engagement in Early Childhood Education and connect their learning to CDECE course topics.

 

Task: For this assignment you will be exploring 2 of the modules inside of the “virtual lab school” https://www.virtuallabschool.org/preschool.

Each of the following topics contain 5 different modules or topics

  • Learning Environments
  • Family Engagement.
  1. Go to the virtual preschool site (above) and explore all of the topics under learning environments and family engagement.
    • Read the materials
    • View the videos
    • Take the assessments.
  2. Write a 4-5 page paper that answers the following prompts and is formatted as follows:

 

  1. Summarize: Write a summary of what you discovered from each module under each topic. (Each summary (a and b) should specifically address each topic and be approximately 1 page in length)
    1. Learning Environments
      1. Introduction
      2. The indoor environment
  • The outdoor environment
  1. Materials
  2. Schedules and routines
  1. Family engagement
    1. Introduction
    2. Promoting family engagement
  • Communication with families
  1. Working with families with children who have special needs
  2. Strengthening and supporting military families and families facing challenges

 

  1. Connect and Reflect: connect to the text and other course materials and reflect on how the information you have explored informs your current or future career with children and/or families.
    1. Learning Environments
      1. How does the information you have explored in the learning environments module relate to topics we have explored in CDECE 48 this semester? (provide reasoning and back up your connection with direct text quotes)
      2. What new ideas or information did you discover? (choose 2-4 new ideas and why you think they are important)
  • Reflect on what this information means to you- how do you imagine you will use this information in your present or future career and why. (don’t forget the why!)
  1. Family Engagement
    1. How does the information you have explored in the family engagement module relate to topics we have explored in CDECE 48 this semester? (provide reasoning and back up your connection with direct text quotes)
    2. What new ideas or information did you discover? (choose 2-4 new ideas and why you think they are important)

**** this is a different type of rubric than we have use before, this is a “check box” rubric.  The paper is worth a possible 15 points- you can see below how the possible points will be distributed and you can check your paper before you turn it in.  Make sure that you can clearly demonstrate each of the 9 descriptions below for full points.

 

Grading Rubric:  15 possible points

  • Paper is standardly formatted with a heading that has the student’s name, course and assignment title (1 pt)
  • A summary of the learning environments module is present and addresses all 5 topics (2 pts)
  • A summary of the family engagement module is present and addresses all 5 topics (2 pts)
  • All three “connect and reflect” questions are answered under learning environments (1 pts)
  • All three “connect and reflect” questions are answered under family engagement (1 pts)
  • Two meaningful and accurately cited text quotes are included under II, a, i (highlighted above) (2 pts)
  • Two meaningful and accurately cited text quotes are included under II, b, i (highlighted above) (2 pts)
  • The paper has less than 10 grammatical, punctuation, spelling and/or sentence structure errors (2 pts)
  • The paper shows a strong understanding of each topic and is well connected to both course content and the virtual preschool modules. This is shown by providing well connected examples and thoroughly addressing each prompt. (2 pts)
