In my opinion, it is a fair assessment to call Andrew Carnegie and John Rockefeller “Captains of industry”. The two men raised two of the most innovative businesses in the 19th century. John Rockefeller founded the “Standard Oil Company”, which was the first great business trust in the United States. This business dominated the oil industry while gaining a monopoly by buying competing companies to bring “order and stability” to the market. Andrew Carnegie was known for his “Carnegie Steel Company” which changed the steel production in the US. He was a successful businessman and earned millions of dollars for his company.
I also understand why people call these two men “Robber Barons” because they made some unethical and selfish decisions. Carnegie supported workers but spoiled several unions. Rockefeller worked together with railroads to destroy competitors.
Summarized I would say, that even though these two men were a kind of “Robber Barons”, everybody that wants to be successful has to make sacrifices in order to change the market and to provide people good products. Therefore Rockefeller and Carnegie are “Captains of Industrie”.

I think that Andrew Carnegie and John Rockefeller are “Robber Barons”. John Rockefeller owned a monopoly. Which meant he could set the prices of oil. He could also decide the wadge his workers should get and they would have nothing to compare it to. He was known to buy out his competitors. Competition would help drive the price of oil down for the consumer. He owned everything he needed to produce and deliver oil. Andrew Carnegies’ steel factory was open 24 hours a day. Workers would work 12 hour shifts. The only holiday he offered them was the fourth of July. He also had dangerous working conditions. He did not have any safety measures in place, he was only concerned about production. Due to no safety measures there were multiple deaths in a single month. I believe that everyone deserves a safe work environment.

In my opinion, I think Andrew Carnergie and John Rockefeller should be named as ” captains of the industry”. They were the people that put the foundation of the U.S oil and steel industries, which was the base of all other important inventions and related developments at then time. Not only their achievements are admirable, but their contributions to the society are remarkable. During the last 18 years of his life, Andew Carnergie gave away $350 million dollars (almost 90 percent of his fortune) to charities, foundations, and universities. His 1889 article proclaiming “The Gospel of Wealth” called on the rich to use their wealth to improve society, and stimulated a wave of philanthropy”. At the same time, John Rockefeller’s fortune was mainly used to create the modern systematic approach of targeted philanthropy through the creation of foundations that had a major effect on medicine, education, and scientific research. His foundations pioneered the development of medical research and were instrumental in the near-eradication of hookworm and yellow fever in the United States.
