ESSAY TOPIC
A common question in cultural studies is ‘why does this matter?’.
Below you will find a selection of Facebook comments made on posts made by Australian
news outlets in the last year. These comments relate to the topics of power, wealth and
poverty, gender, religion, youth cultures and multiculturalism.
You may find some of these comments unpleasant or confronting. However, the purpose of
this task is to engage with and critique some of the challenging issues and attitudes that
face us in real life today.
Links to the relevant news stories have been provided for each source. These can be used to
provide extra context for the discussion, but should not be the focus of your essay. The
Facebook comments provided, and your response to them, are the main focus of your
essay.

INSTRUCTIONS
Choose one of the six topics listed below. Note: You cannot complete an essay on the
same topic that you did your debate on.
Using the Facebook posts provided for your chosen topic as stimulus, write:
a 50 – 100 word reply to at least one individual comment
a 1,100 word justification/explanation of your response in essay format
Your justification should:
Identify the key issue(s) or idea(s) raised in the topic
Formulate an argument that supports or opposes these key ideas
Respond directly to the ideas raised in these posts, with specific reference to at
least one individual comment from the stimulus provided
Use academic terms you have learned in class
Provide a full reference list that contains at least four readings
Note: While your own hypothetical reply to the Facebook comment(s) does not need to use
academic language, your essay should aim to meet the conventions of a formal academic
response.
All of these topics will be discussed in detail during class time, and will also be addressed in
the Seminar presentation assessment. Time will also be dedicated in class to discussing the
essay topics in order to help you choose the best topic for you. If you have any questions,
please ask your teacher.

FURTHER INFORMATION
A marking rubric will be used for this task. It will be uploaded to vUWS at least two weeks prior to
the due date for this task.
The essay will be marked online. Once marked, students will be able to access their grade via
vUWS.
You should use the following tips when writing your justification:
Do use UWS Harvard referencing style. Yourtutor will provide you with an overview of
thisreferencing style, and furtherresources will be available on vUWS.
Do go beyond the referencesprovided.
Do use research – notopinion.
Do use 12 point font — Arial or TimesNew Roman with double-line spacing.
Do keep within the word limit (that is, 1200 words +/– 10%).
Do write in “essay style” (thatis, using correctsentence and paragraph construction).
Do use a level of English expression that does not mask the content — teachers can
onlymark what they can read and understand reasonably well.
Do read over your work at least once priorto submission. Rememberto use spellcheck.
Do not use dot points, lists or headings – thisis an essay.
