Overview

Homebuilders often using cheaper building materials to maximize their profit at the expense of the homeowner’s long term utility bill. Given the desire to improve energy efficiency in a “green” society, this sort of wasteful design should be improved.

Consider a situation where you are building a custom home in the low country to South Carolina. The builder offers standard walls composed of hardwood siding, a vapor barrier, one-half inch thick plywood, 2×4 frame backfilled with insulation, drywall, and latex paint (see illustration in Fig. 1). A savvy homeowner, you realize it may be worthwhile to pay a little extra now for better insulated walls and save on utility bills for the next 20 years.

You are to propose a new design for your exterior walls. Due to the Homeowners Association in your community, you cannot change the material of the external façade (hardwood siding). Other constraints to consider include the material costs and dimensions of your design. A four foot thick exterior wall might insulate well, but it will reduce the living space of the house considerably. Some materials, e.g. paint, are thin enough that they may be neglected in your analysis.

Deliverables

You are to write a 1-3 page (single-spaced) summary of your design. Only one report is required per team (you may work alone or in groups of two). The report should discuss the current exterior wall and the proposed exterior wall in terms of R-value and material cost. Copies of the corresponding analyses should be attached. The analyses should be typed using proper equation formatting and include any necessary diagrams. You should have a minimum of three analyses (the current configuration, an initial guess for a better configuration, and at least one attempt to improve that guess). You will need to find sources (online is fine) to get R-values and costs for your design. Please cite these sources in your report. Finally, you should estimate the energy cost of each design for a typical summer day in the low country. Assume your house has 2000 sq. ft. of wall space, that you would like to maintain your house at 72°F, and that the cost of electricity is $0.10/kWh. MECH 415 Heat Transfer Design Project
