In his autobiography, Trevor Noah wrote, “Language brings with it an identity and a culture, or at least the perception of it. A shared language says, ‘We’re the same.’ A language barrier says, ‘We’re different.’”
Using Trevor Noah’s quote as a critical lens, referencing the essays we ready by Gloria Anzaldúa and Jaswinder Bolina, and your own knowledge and experiences (no formal/secondary research), write a 1,100-word (4 pages, double-spaced) reflection essay that discusses the role language plays in your personal identity.
Some of the questions you can consider are:
•Should the written or spoken language used by individuals always reflect their ethnic background?
•Are individuals free to use whatever language they choose depending on the situation or circumstances?
Use brainstorming, online/class discussions, and handouts in Course Documents to help develop your thesis, topic sentences for each body paragraph, and supporting details for each paragraph. (Including in-text citations for quotes or paraphrased details in the outline saves a lot of headaches during drafting). Decide on what approach you want to take in your essay (for example, an argument, an explanation or exposition, or compare and contrast).
Review MLA rules for paper formatting and citations, both in-text and on the Works Cited page. There is a sample MLA student paper in Course Documents section of Webcampus.
If you have questions or concerns about the paper, seek tutoring assistance or email me. We can set up a Zoom session if necessary.
