Instructions are stated in the additional materials

Please select and answer ONE of the questions below in an analytical essay format (i.e. make sure to have a short introduction, main claim/argument, discuss relevant concepts from the course literature, evidence, conclusion). Regarding the technical requirements, the word limit for your answer is 2.500 words, which includes your main text and any footnotes (if necessary) but excludes the title page (use the general BA ES title page template) and the list of references (APA format). As in the take home exam for your International Relations course in period 3, we have 2.500 words as a strict upper limit for your answers. Please also take care not to stay too much below 2.500 words (maximum 10%). This means it is advisable to have an answer between 2.250 and 2.500 words.  EUS 2002 Comparative Politics and Government Questions

QUESTION 1

Considering the textbook chapter assigned for this course (by Amie Kreppel), is there any variation in the ability of parliaments (the legislative branch) to exercise their role of scrutinizing the government (the executive branch)? If you detect such variation, select and analyze one example of a parliament that exercises strong oversight of the government and one parliament that exercises weak(er) oversight of the government. How do you explain this difference in scrutiny? (Please do not select more than three reasons, as the scope of the paper is limited. If in doubt, select and analyze the most important reasons in your view.) You can also draw on the Auel et al. (2015) article assigned for the course or any other relevant academic literature to develop your answer. You may pick any suitable countries (European or global focus), but please make sure that the selected countries meet at least the criteria for a hybrid (illiberal) democracy. Authoritarian regimes are outside the scope of this exam question.

OR QUESTION 2

Explain (briefly) the contemporary trend in democracies called the politicization of law (it is discussed in the Ferejohn article assigned for the course). In light of this explanation, analyze two positive and two negative consequences of the politicization of law using relevant and specific (country) examples. You may pick any suitable country(ies) for your examples (European or global focus), but please make sure that the selected country (ies) meets at least the criteria for a hybrid (illiberal) democracy. Authoritarian regimes are outside the scope of this exam question.
