1. Look through the list of cartoons in the “19th Century Political Cartoons” folder onBlackboard.

2. Select one cartoon that jumped out to you or intrigued you the most.
3. Break down this image. If you need help doing that, visit this page: http://www.loc.gov/teachers/classroommaterials/presentationsandactivities/activities/political-cartoon/cag.htmlJot down some notes (you can even make athought web), and make note of the following as you do so:

1. Who or whom does the cartoon depict?
2. Why are they depicted like that?
3. Who is the intended audience?
4. What is the artist suggesting the audience do or feel?
5. What kind of suggestion is the artist expecting?
6. What questions does the cartoon raise about the subject?
7. What, if any, symbolism is present (color can be a symbol, too)?
8. What could these symbols mean?
9. If you are not certain of any of the above, make an educated guess. Political

cartoons are geared at general, but educated, audiences. They are supposed to

make sense to a non-specialized audience.

5. Once you have a rough sketch of what the cartoon is trying to say and how it is

trying to say it, open a word processor.

1. Write at least 400 words on the meaning of the cartoon (not the background of the cartoon, or what’s going on in the cartoon itself). You may address all, some, or none of the questions listed above or on the Library of Congress website, but make sure you get across the “big idea(s)” or the thesis of the cartoon.
2. Save the document as a .doc, .docx, or .pdf file.
3. Turn it in.
4. Get points.
