For the past few decades, sustainability has been an increasingly important concept that affects many aspects of business. More and more consumers are making consumption decisions that reflect their desire to protect the environment. Thus, firms that are perceived to be indifferent to their environmental responsibilities are likely to be criticized and penalized. As a result, many companies have embraced the “green marketing” concept to capture the environmentally- conscious market and have taken positive steps toward sustainability in many aspects of their business (e.g., greening their supply chain) to help achieve their business goals.
The purpose of this project is to identify a successful sustainable product and analyze the sustainability practices involved in various aspects of the product in the global market. First, you will select a for-profit business in any industry or a non-profit organization focusing on sustainable products/practices and introduce it. Second, describe one of its successful sustainable products in detail. Third, discuss the strategic elements of materials, design, product development, production, retailing, and post-use for the business as well as the role of technology and examine what sustainability practices are employed during the entire product cycle. In-depth discussions on the sustainable practices in the supply chains are required. Lastly, justify why and how the successful sustainable product/practice and the business you have chosen contribute to the sustainable world and its future, considering the triple bottom line including economic, social, and environmental benefits. In order to research your chosen product and company/organization, you should use various literature/media sources in print or online. I also recommend that you interview its owner/CEO (or an appropriate employee) to gather data to address the points required for the project; however, an interview is optional. Your interview can be conducted in person or via video conferencing (e.g., Skype, Zoom), phone, or email. If you choose to conduct an interview and submit your interview questionnaire with 10-30 questions and the answers (transcript of your interview) with a copy of the interviewee’s business card, you will receive 12 extra points on the project. You will also need to submit a brief description of the interview method employed (e.g., in person, email, Skype) and any difficulties in conducting the interview. The additional materials required for the extra credit should be attached at the end of the paper in the same Word file.
You should follow the format below when writing your paper:
- Use headings/subheadings.
- At least one image of your chosen sustainable product/practice is required.
- Length: 8-15 pages (double-spaced, images are excluded from page minimum)
- Font/size: Times New Roman/12
- Margin: 1” on all sides
- Use APA style
You must submit a Word file of your paper through the Canvas site by the due date. Creative and innovative ideas, the appropriateness and thoroughness of your discussion of the points outlined above, and organization and quality of writing will be important for your grade.
