Truss Structures Engineering Statics Assignment
Students must critically observe everyday objects around them and for some selected ones, identify the way they are supported by their surroundings. Each student must select 2 objects from the following distribution:
- construction machines or a part of a machine/frame from machine shop,
- billboards or signs,
- bridges, ceilings or roof supports or other truss structures.
Written assignments
Are designed to teach you how to prepare and to perform analyses in a logical manner and to practice the communication of engineering concepts.
ASSIGNMENT For each one of the selected objects you must create a documentation consisting of:
- Photograph of the object (with the supports exposed). Insert it in the report document. 2. Choose an entire object or a part of it, draw an outlined shape of the body identifying its
points of contact with other objects. 3. Draw a Free Body Diagram of the object with a clear drawing indicating dimensions as well as all forces and moments applied. In most cases loads as well as dimensions will be estimates (must be reasonable estimates, use Internet or other resources). 4. Formulate the problem statement with all given parameters, such as weights, external forces and moments, dimensions, etc, and parameters which have to be defined. Assign symbols to all relevant parameters. 5. Establish the x, y, z coordinate system with the origin at a convenient point. 6. Write the force and moment equilibrium equations Sum(Fi) = 0, Sum(Mi) = 0. 7. Provide statics solution producing the support forces. In case of a statically indeterminate system, the student has to propose simplifications in order to avoid the difficulty. 8. If possible, propose an alternative method of support in order to add value to the object or in order to simplify the construction. Truss Structures Engineering Statics Assignment
Formal Requirements for Written Assignment It will be graded based on content and presentation! 1. Solutions are to be completed on Letter size (8.5 x 11 in) paper using a PENCIL. 2. Solution should be neatly written, easily legible and laid out in a logical arrangement. 3. Any drawings, such as Free body Diagrams or optional, should be neat and clear. Straight lines are to be drawn with a straight edge (ruler, student ID etc.) rather than freehand. 5. Any mistakes should be completely erased. Crossing or scribbling out incorrect steps is not acceptable. 6. Assignments should be stapled in the upper left hand corner with the pages in the right order.
Neatness Penalty is up to 15% of the score. An assignment that is poorly done and violates several of these requirements will not be graded and a score of zero will be given. Truss Structures Engineering Statics Assignment
