Starting during the Great Depression the WPA (Links to an external site.) began recording interviews with formerly enslaved people. There are thousands of transcripts of these interviews, which have served as an incredible source for historians working on slavery. Some of these we still have recordings of. Many of the recordings are hard to hear, but we are going to listen to one that is relatively clear. There are moments when it is difficult to follow the conversation. Part of this is because the sound quality is bad, and some of it is because following people’s line of thought when they are asked broad questions, and asked to recall the past is difficult. This is going to sound ridiculous, but I suggest laying somewhere with your eyes close, and only opening to take notes occasionally.It helps you follow along, and it can help you start to imagine how people may be acting and interacting in the room.
I will warn you that he bounces back and forth between before and after the civil war. So you do have to listen all the way through. It also seems like he only remembers very little, but if you listen closely you’ll notice that he is deciding not to share information at times – it’s not that he does not have the memories.
For the essay, do two things. What does Fountain Hughs have to say about his experience as an enslaved child? In other words, what things does he actually recount happening? The second part is to use these descriptions, and his comments on them, to start to tease out how he feels about his experience as a previous enslave man.
