In the graphic novel Watchmen, successful businessman Adrian Veidt (once the superhero Ozymandias) has a plan for saving the human race from nuclear war, which many think is inevitable. Veidt plans to stage an attack that will kill millions of people, yet everyone will think the attack came from some nonhuman force. This will cause the nations of the world to join together to fight the common enemy, if it ever returns. Veidt’s logic is that even though millions of people will die, billions will be saved. Explain how someone following Kant’s ethics would argue against Veidt’s plan. Then explain how a follower of utilitarian ethics might defend Veidt’s plan. Which side do you think has the better case?
