This year, we’ve all experienced the effects of living through the COVID-19 pandemic.
The coronavirus has disrupted our individual lives on a micro level and our social
institutions on a macro level.
For this assignment, you’ll submit a 3-4 page paper in which you reflect on the COVID-
19 pandemic through the use of sociological concepts. You can choose to include
personal experiences, or you can write in the third person if you prefer. You’re not
required to use outside sources, but if you do, please cite them in the format of your
choice.

As you write your paper, please refer to these steps:
1) Include a brief introduction.
2) Discuss one significant aspect of the pandemic. I’ve included some ideas below; feel
free to draw on these or to choose your own.
3) Apply course concepts to your analysis of this aspect. You can be flexible in how you
do this, as there is a lot to work with. It’s fine to use material from OpenStax that we
haven’t discussed yet in lecture, as long as you feel comfortable that you understand the
material.
4) Repeat steps 2 and 3, discussing two more aspects of the pandemic.
5) Apply one of the “Big Four” theoretical perspectives (functionalism, conflict theory,
feminism, or symbolic interactionism) to your discussion. How can we view the pandemic
and its effects through that lens? This should be its own paragraph and should tie up
your earlier analysis of three factors.

6) Briefly conclude your paper. Your application of theory can serve as a conclusion
paragraph if you’d like, or you can add a short concluding paragraph afterward.

Instrucঞons for Peer Reviews:
These are the same as the instructions for Paper 1. Once the due date has passed,
Canvas will automatically assign you two peer reviews. Each peer review is worth 5
points and will count toward the 100 points possible for your paper.
Here are some things to keep in mind as you write your peer reviews:
1) Please submit a full paragraph of at least 6-8 sentences for each review.
2) Include positive feedback. Make sure to point out what you liked about your
classmate’s paper. Go for specific, personal feedback. Rather than “You’re a great
writer,” try something like, “I appreciated your discussion of stratification; I hadn’t thought
about all of the ways it connects to the pandemic.”
3) Include at least one question you had while reading the paper. If you
have constructive criticism, this is a great way to include it. Rather than say, “You didn’t
connect your third paragraph to course material,” you can instead say something like,
“Your section on panic buying was entertaining to read; how do you think panic buying
connects to group norms and collective behavior?”
4) Above all, be kind! The purpose of peer reviews is primarily to expose you to your
classmates’ writing. Recall that you’re reading someone’s personal thoughts; this isn’t a
place to nitpick.

Your paper should be 3-4 pages, double spaced, 12-point Times New Roman font,
standard margins. Upload your document in either Word or PDF format. If this isn’t
doable, please message me about it in advance, as I can’t open certain formats.
Your paper is due by 11:59 P.M. on Friday, October 23rd.
Your peer reviews are due by 11:59 P.M. on Friday, October 30th.

Here are a few significant aspects of the pandemic that you can readily connect to course
concepts. You can work with these or choose your own.
The interconnectedness of social institutions: How does dysfunction in one system
(health and medicine) affect others?
Research elements: What role has empirical research played? How do we know
whether we can trust the information we receive from the mass media?
Culture: Has culture affected how people respond to the pandemic? How about
subcultures like political parties?
Social interaction: How have social norms changed? Day-to-day social interactions?
Definitions of deviance?
Groups and organizations: How have organizations worked to help Americans during
this crisis? How have they impeded progress?
Social stratification: Which groups have been hit hardest by the pandemic itself and by
changing economic conditions?
Race, gender, religion, disability, and so on: How does the pandemic intersect with
these aspects of life?
Families and aging: How have family systems – particularly the elderly – been affected?
Health and medicine: Has the pandemic exposed vulnerabilities or revealed strengths
in our health care system? How so?
Work, school, and the economy: How has the pandemic influenced these social
institutions? How have schools and workplaces changed?
Politics: How has government response affected the course of the pandemic? How
might the pandemic affect our upcoming election?
Collective behavior: What collective behaviors have we seen during the pandemic?
How have we been drawn into mass hysteria (e.g., panic buying), and how have we
risen to the occasion in positive ways?
Here are a few thoughts on how the pandemic might relate to theory:

Functionalism: COVID-19 has shown how interconnected our social institutions are.
How has the pandemic affected our social institutions – work, school, family, government,
health care, and so on? In turn, how have each of these institutions impacted the course
of the pandemic (for example, government policies, workplace shutdowns, etc)? Has the
crisis exposed dysfunctions within society? How so?
Conflict theory: COVID-19 has exposed structural inequality within society. How have
certain groups (based on race, social class, and other factors) been particularly
vulnerable? As society eventually rebuilds, the economic impact will remain – how do you
think this will impact stratification in our country or even on a global level? Who are the
“winners” (if any) in this crisis? Who are the “losers”?
Feminism: Interestingly, many families returned to more traditional gender roles once the
pandemic started. Work and family dynamics shifted, and many women took on the task
of homeschooling children. What thoughts do you have about gender as it relates to the
pandemic? Have you seen evidence of patriarchy in the way society has responded?
How so?
Symbolic interactionism: While it’s easy to view COVID-19 as a macro issue, it
ultimately affects our daily interactions on a micro level. What elements of our day-to-day
lives have changed as a result of the pandemic? Have certain rituals or symbols
emerged in response? In my neighborhood, for example, we clap for first responders at 8
PM each night; what’s the significance of this type of ritual?
