Art 104: Midterm Exam

This exam must be submitted by email to akeegan@bmcc.cuny.edu Instructions:
For this exam you will be asked to answer three questions to be answered in written form (full sentences and paragraphs). These questions consist of two images and will ask for specific information that you must respond to. Each of these three questions will require you to write a page-length response (250 words minimum). You must identify all images by title, date and artist (if applicable) in your writing. Everything must be written in your own words, no quotations.
Credit will be based on four things:
Accurate information on the artwork (25%)
Clear and thoughtful responses to the questions (25%)
Demonstrating an understand of the art works in term of materials (what they are made of) and historical context (why they are historically significant) (25%)
Fulfilling all the requirements, such as length, due date, and proper format (25%)
Extra credit will be given for proper use of vocabulary terms in your responses.
You can use any resource for this assignment: Smarthistory, Blackboard materials, Wikipedia, museum websites, etc. Just be sure that the information is accurate.
Art 104 Midterm Exam
Responses must be typed,12-point font, double spaced, with your name, “Art 104” and date at the top. You must also write “Art 104-Midterm” in the subject line of your email to me.
I would prefer your exams submitted by email as an attached Word, PDF or similar document or pasted into the body of an email.

These works were created in different cultures at different times. Identify both works of art and explain something about the context (historical time and culture, etc.) in which they were created. How do these artists reflect certain historical events of their time in their work? Which one of these works exemplifies the Baroque style in art and why? Which one of these works exemplifies the art of Norther Europe in 15th century, and why?

Both works are examples of the Italian Renaissance. How do both works reflect the Renaissance interest in classicism? What are other features of Renaissance art that can be found in these two works? Identify both pieces and be sure to give some information about why they were created and their historical context.

These are two paintings from different cultures. Write briefly about the cultural context and background for each of these works. How are they different in terms of medium (what they are made of and how they were made)? Are there any similarities between these two works in terms of color, composition (the way things are arranged in the painting) and subject matter? What were the reasons for these works of art being made? Hint: one was to be hung in a royal court, the other was for a private collector.
