Personality researchers can use various research methods to explore personality empirically, which include the experimental, passive and case study method. This paper explains the case study method, how psychologists can implement it, and highlights some of its strengths and weaknesses. In psychology, case study method involves in-depth investigations of a single person or group of participants by either observing them or constructing their case history (Yin, 2013). In other words, the method uses the idiographic approach by obtaining detailed information about a single target.
By using the case study, researchers need to select appropriate methods of data collection and analysis in order to generate material necessary for the case study (Thomas, 2015). Psychologists can accumulate the data from various sources that include observations of a participant’s daily routine, personal notes like letters and notes, official documents like clinical notes and case notes, diaries and unstructured interview with either the participant or someone who knows him or her. Most of these sources are likely to generate qualitative information, but some of them can still produce numerical data. The researchers can then use different theories such as the interpretative phenomenological analysis, grounded theory, and text interpretation to analyze the data collected (Thomas, 2015). Furthermore, only qualified professions such as therapist, psychiatrist, and psychologist can conduct a case study on a particular individual because it raises the ethical issue of competence.
The strengths of the case study method include its ability to provide detailed information on an individual, give insight for further research and allow investigation of otherwise unethical situations. It employs an in-depth, multi-side approach that allows psychologists to study human behavior and thought that would be impractical or unethical to explore using other methods (Yin, 2011). The method also has several limitations that include the inability to generalize the result because it is not representative and it is time-consuming as well. The researchers’ biases may also influence the case study through their subjective feeling, and the participant may not give some vital information making it hard to interpret.
