ACOTE standards addressed:
1) Demonstrate knowledge of:
The structure and function of the human body to include the biological and physical sciences, neurosciences, kinesiology, and biomechanics.
Human development throughout the lifespan (infants, children, adolescents, adults, and older adults). Course content must include, but is not limited to, developmental psychology.
Concepts of human behavior to include the behavioral sciences, social sciences, and science of occupation. (B.1.1)
2) Demonstrate knowledge of the effects of disease processes including heritable diseases, genetic conditions, mental illness, disability, trauma, and injury on occupational performance. (B.3.5)
3) Locate and demonstrate understanding of professional literature, including the quality of the source of information, to make evidence-based practice decisions in collaboration with the occupational therapist. (B.6.1)
Explain how scholarly activities and literature contribute to the development of the profession.
Assignment
The purpose of the assignment is to familiarize the student with spinal cord injuries. The assignment will detail the abilities and deficits associated with this medical condition. The assignment will describe the impact and outcomes of function on domains of the OT Practice Framework.
Students will be assigned either High-Cervical (C1-C4), Low-Cervical (C5-C8), Thoracic Nerves (T1-T6) or Thoracic Nerves (T6-T12). Students will use a minimum of one scholarly article related to spinal cord injury and then complete the following:
Fully define a spinal cord injury and your assigned spinal cord injury level. Please include signs, symptoms, incidence (gender, age), and any key medical terminology (i.e. complete/ incomplete). If possible, identify individuals with this diagnosis from media, news etc.
Explain the main causes of your assigned level of spinal cord injury, the prognosis and posttraumatic complications and any use of external fixatures/orthotics, use of adaptive equipment and/or assistive technology.
Identify an individual’s resulting abilities and deficits from the assigned level of spinal cord injury.
Describe the impact that your spinal cord injury level has on the domains of areas of occupation, performance skills, performance patterns, context and environment as listed in the OT Practice Framework
What should be the goal of the occupational therapy practitioner? Please address relevant practice settings, frames of reference and how they apply, and adapted equipment that would be relevant.
Complete the Spinal Cord Injury/Functional Outcomes Table for all levels of SCI. You will identify the primary key muscles impacted by the injury; the movements spared or gained at the level of injury and the functional outcomes and interventions addressed at the level of injury.
This paper should be three to four pages, not including the table, using the format outlined in the Course Syllabus. Include the reference for the OT Practice Framework and any other resources using APA formatting at the end of the paper.
NOTE: Please copy the Evaluation Rubric for Written Work from these instructions and paste the entire Rubric into the very end of your paper — after any references or appendices. Thank you!
