Using Chapter 1, 2, 3 and 4 of The Ten Core Concepts,

  1. select a news article, television episode, podcast episode, or song worth summarizing.
  2. apply the skills of close reading and analysis
  3. create an objective summary that accurately conveys the main idea and subordinate ideas.
  4. formulate your own analysis
  5. compose an essay that combines your summary of the article and your analysis of the article.

Detailed Instructions:

Your essay should consist of 2-3 typed, double-spaced pages. Focus your essay on an subject that interests and/or concerns you.

  • Times New Roman or Arial
  • Font size 12
  • 1” margins on all sides
  • Proper MLA citation of your source (use Purdue OWL as a reference)
  • Correct grammar and mechanics

 

Include these parts in your essay:

 

Title

  • Catch the reader’s attention with a creative, relevant phrase.
  • Avoid a too general title (for instance “Educational Standards” or “Gun control”)
  • Titles should be longer than 3 words
  • Titles are NOT bold, italic or underlined

 

Introduction paragraph (1)

  • Make sure to use attribution the first time you are introducing your audience to what you are analyzing and summarizing (see section on attribution)
  • Introduce the main ideas that it focuses on
  • Three parts to the intro:
    • HOOK,
    • More narrow examples leading to the thesis,
    • THESIS STATEMENT: What are YOU saying about the article, song, tv episode, or podcast? (This is where you begin the analysis): ONE CLAIM STATEMENT that presents an overall idea of what your paper will talk about.
