English 1301 Connections Essay Fall 2020
Working thesis: Monday, October 5th
First draft for peer editing: Monday, October 19th
Revised draft: Monday, October 26th
This five-to-six-page paper asks you to consider the possible comparisons and contrasts between:
1) Words – A written or oral account of an historical trend or event, and
2) Images – Visual representation(s) of this same historical trend or event, such as films, photographs, or paintings.
English 1301 Connections Essay Fall 2020
The paper should clearly argue a debatable thesis about the relationships among visual representation(s) of an historical event and written or oral account (s).
How do the two kinds of representation, written and visual, tell their stories? Do they match up? Does it matter whether they do or not?
What parts of the story does each emphasize and what might be left unsaid?
Please bold your thesis and use active voice only in your thesis. Each paragraph’s opening sentence must also use active voice only.
The paper should cite at least seven sources, including your cited photo(s) or film(s), and should conform to APA conventions throughout, including parenthetical in-text citations and a references list.
At least two of your sources must exist in non-electronic, conventionally published form, though they might also be available in digital versions.

A personal interview may count toward one of these seven sources, though more are welcome if the total number of sources increases.
If your paper’s “image” part relies on still images (photos), you will need to discuss at least three photos.
If your paper’s “image” part focuses primarily on a film, you will need to discuss at least three scenes from the movie.
Some historical topics with plenty of visual “history” might include profound, but seemingly undramatic topics, such as regional or international immigration or suburbanization. Consider also shifts in marriage, education, income, housing, religious observance, voting, family size, or class mobility, all of which have many visual accounts in film and photography.
We’ll be practicing how to find sources useful to this essay – and others- in the weeks ahead.
Contrasting a parent or grandparent’s life with your own at the same age can generate historical topics (and thus film or movie suggestions) that you might not have considered.

You might also investigate how closely (or not) a favorite movie follows history. Or has a movie itself shaped historical memory?
