All responses should offer conceptual engagement with terms that we’ve learned in class, this means defining terms and demonstrate knowledge of it through application to an example. Students are encouraged to evaluate the strengths and limitations of various perspectives on issues posed in the question. It is important to substantiate claims with examples and provide rationality.
- Compare and contrast the experiences of colonialism for Aboriginal peoples (either in North America and/or Latin America) and Black people. Are there similarities in the colonial project that was imposed by the English, French, Spanish and Portugal across North and South America? What was the role of the rule of law and Church during colonialism? What were some strategies of resistance?
- In our course, we have discussed how the term race has gone through numerous shifts in terms of how it is conceptualized and its consequences. Please discuss the context that gave rise to the shifts in thinking about race and its ramifications. Reflect on the dynamic between race and relations of power.
