Colonialism in America

INDG 2030 Colonialism in America

  • Why did the colonizers set abroad in search of new land?
  • What was the context in their country?
  • Notion of manifest destiny; “right of discovery”
  • When the settler arrived, there was violence and death. The number of Aboriginal people in the America’s declined during and after colonialism
  • In addition to the violence, Aboriginal people were subject to diseases that their immune systems did not recognize. The exposure to new disease killed many Aboriginal people
  • The other way in which Aboriginal people were killed was through displacement. Displacement rendered some people to starve and/or die from thirst. They may also have also been killed by wild animals.
  • Much of what we know about colonialism from the standpoint of the colonized derives from oral history. What is oral history?
  • Can colonialism happen again? Some claim that it can? Others argue never again, what do you think?
  • What did the America’s look like prior to colonialism? In what is now Mexico and Peru, there were two empires that were advanced civilizations in terms of infrastructure, order and hygiene, arts, culture, food, mathematics and farming.
  • They also had a booming commerce seen
  • Ethnic diversity among Aboriginal people co-existed within the empires
  • While the colonizers were overwhelmed with the success of the Incas and Aztecs, they were also surprised in that for the Europeans, they represent an inferior group. Their inferiority was based on the notion that they’re pagans and therefore, primitive and/or barbaric. Part of what fueled their perception about being barbaric were some of the practices carried out by Aboriginals.
  • In addition to being soulless, the colonizers considered that the Aboriginals were a people without history.
  • The notion that the Aboriginals do not have a soul, are a people without history and engage in barbaric practices fortified the manifest destiny mission of the colonizers in that they now presumed to be in a position of having to “save” the Aboriginals, whom they viewed as victims
