SWRK111 Literature Review Paper Assignment

Description

In this assignment, students are required to submit the annotated bibliography of ten or more scholarly resources (journal papers). Each annotated bibliography should include the following:

  1. Full bibliographical information, APA style (1 point each; up to 10 points)
  2. Students’ own summary (150 to 200 words) of the scholarly resources (2 points each; up to 20 points)
    1. Main research question & hypotheses
    2. Sampling, measurement, & research design (not too wordy; be brief)
    3. Main findings & limitations
  3. Keywords/phrases that will be relevant to students’ literature review (1 point each; up to 10 points)
    1. Free format; single word, phrases, or even sentences are fine as long as they are relevant to students’ literature review.
  4. Topic outline of the final LR Paper (10 points)
    1. Create the “headings” of the final LR Paper, using the keywords/phrases in #3 as a source.

Students can use numbering in the annotated bibliography. See the example below.

Upload requirement

Everything must be typed and saved in either MS Word file format (preferred) or PDF format. If you are using the Pages in the Mac, please save the file as the PDF or Word file format using “File à Export to” menu; do not submit the Pages file, as Canvas does not properly display the Pages file format and will NOT accept Pages file upload.

Example of annotated bibliography

Below is an example from the previous students’ submission. First section after numbering shows full bibliography, followed by summary of the paper. This annotated bibliography summarizes with six keywords. Note that this student chose only one or two words for keywords, which is NOT ideal. Students can cite any information that they think relevant to their literature review, so that they can use these keywords/phrases in the final literature review paper.

  1. Borsie, P., Lucassen, P. J., Wetzels, R. B., Pot, A. M., & Koopmans, P. M. (2018). Neuropsychiatric symptoms and psychotropic drug use in patients with dementia in general practices. Family Practice, 35(1), 22-28. doi:10.1093/fampra/cmx061

Brosie et al., argue that while psychotropic medications (e.g., antipsychotics) are frequently prescribed to patients with dementia who show signs of agitation, psychosis, and anxiety, there is limited evidence supporting the effectiveness of psychotropic drug use. Serious side effects can come from the use of such medication including: accelerated cognitive decline, stroke, and death. This study was a cross-sectional analysis and consisted of 117 patients who showed a minimum of one neuropsychiatric symptom (NPS), (e.g., delusions, hallucinations, depressive symptoms, anxiety, euphoria, agitation, aggression, apathy, and disinhibition). The researchers summarized the demographic and clinical characteristics of the participants by descriptives, which was then analyzed using the Statistical package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). According to Brosie et al., 92.2% of the participants had one or more NPS and the most common was agitation/aggression followed by dysphoria/depression, and irritability/lability. The researchers concluded that although the prevalence of psychotropic drug use (PDU) in the study is low compared to other studies, there was still 29% of participants who had a prescription for at least one psychotropic medication. One of the limitations that appeared in this study was that the participants on which this study was conducted were individuals with cognitive impairment, not specifically with a diagnosis of dementia. Another limitation that was present was the high refusal rate of the patients.

Keywords/phrases: Dementia, psychotropic medication, agitation, decline, death, drug reactions.

Example of topic outline

Below is one example of topic outline. Note that this outline has two levels of heading system (1. 2. 3. … & a. b. c. …). You do NOT need to be specific as the example below; use this example as a format reference.
