#1. ​Identification and example (3-4 sentences) (worth 5 points)
Question 1: ​Explain what “social facts” are. In your answer, please be sure to give at

least one example and whether it is a material or nonmaterial social fact and why.

#2. Short Answers/Essays (~3-4 paragraphs) (worth 10 points each) ​Answers must include citations to material (lecture, textbook, original text) and must include at least one citation to the original writings. If you choose Marx or Weber question for your second essay, DO NOT use the same concepts. You must use different concepts/materials for the question that everyone must answer and the one you choose.

Question 2: Compare and contrast the cause(s) of social stratification, as theorized by Marx and Weber. In your answer, be sure to not only define the relevant causes but also link them to how they relate to their broader theories. In your answer, discuss which theorist you find most convincing, why, and given an example.

#3. ​Question 3: Choose only ONE of these questions to answer, A, B, or C: (3-4 paragraphs)

(A)​ Compare and contrast Weber’s three forms of legitimate domination. In your answer, be sure to define concepts you use. Chose one form, and, drawing on historical or contemporary news events or popular culture, give a concrete example of that form, explaining how and why it represents one of these types, including the way it is similar as well as how it may differ.

(B) ​Discuss Marx’s theory of capitalism. In your answer, use at least three different concepts (e.g., class conflict, labor/alienation of labor, use value, exchange value, law of capitalist accumulation, capital/capitalist, commodities, exploitation). Remember to define each concept, how they link to one another, and how they relate to Marx’s theory about capitalism. End with a brief discussion of how useful you think these concepts are today, giving an example to make your point.

(C) ​ Describe Durkheim’s work on Division of Labor in Society. In your explanation, discuss how this relates to mechanical and organic solidarity as well as repressive and restitutive law. Remember to define each concept, how they link to one another, and how they relate to Durkheim’s theory on division of labor. End with a brief discussion on how useful you find one of these concepts to be and give an example to make your point.
