Overview

To successfully complete this two-part assignment, students will complete annotated resources by reviewing several language organizations. Students should start their investigation by referring to the language education acronyms on the Louisiana Department of Education website located in the Learn section for Module 1.

Instructions

Each student is to write an annotation for assigned websites. An example of the formatting for the annotation is provided immediately below. The annotated list should be formatted in APA (Title page, Abstract of at least 150 words, Content with reference and annotation) and there should be a 100-word annotation per resource in Part 1 and Part 2 (Module 1).

Part 1: Foreign Language Organizations

In the first part of this assignment, students will become familiar with their *national language-specific organization, their regional language conference, their state language association, and their nearest national foreign language resource center. Students will create an annotation (100-word paragraph answering the indicated questions) for each resource.

  1. What is the mission (the goals) of each organization?
  2. How do you join each organization?
  3. What is the cost of joining and what are the member benefits (e.g., publications received, discounts on conference attendance)?
  4. Describe the professional development opportunities and/or other major events that each organization will sponsor in the near future (e.g., conferences, summer institutes).
  5. How might your professional growth be affected by your membership and participation in 1 or more of these associations?

Part 1 Websites

  1. your national language-specific organization (AATF, ACL, TESOL, AATSP, AATG, ),
  2. your state language association (FLAVA, VATESOL, etc.),
  3. your regional language conference in which your state is included (CSCTFL, NCTFL, PNCFL, SCOLT, SETESOL or SWCOLT).

*If you are located outside of the country, you can choose three organizations that you feel would be of the most benefit to you. You will be referring to many of these resources throughout the remainder of the course and throughout your teaching career.

Part 2: Language Learning Resources

In the second portion of the assignment, students will continue to explore language learning resources in your profession. Cite only Three of the following language learning resources: TESOL, ACTFL, CARLA, CAL, MLA, SIL, US Dept of Education’s office of English Language Acquisition, FLTEACH, and 1 of the 15 National Foreign Language Resource Center’s (LRC) closest to you.

For each resource’s 100-word annotation, discuss at least 2 ways each resource can provide valuable assistance to language teachers. Make sure you:

  • Use APA formatting to cite each listed resource. Then create a 100­­­-word annotation discussing its value.
  • Include a title page, abstract, resource reference and annotation. There should be a 100-word annotation per three cited resources.
