Information for your Writing Assignment: Research Paper, 30% of your overall grade (I will grade out of 100 points):

PAPER DUE DATES:
Tuesday, October 13: 3-min presentation of your topic and working/possible thesis statement (3 points). You are encouraged to share your screen to show us images of the works/artist you are planning on exploring in your paper.
Tuesday, October 20: Mandatory library workshop via Zoom
Thursday, October 29: 3-5min Self-recorded Presentations of your Work-in-progress Research Paper. Upload to Blackboard Discussion Forum by 11:59 PM on 10/29: PPT with Thesis Statement,
working title, outline and/or rough draft, images of the works you are discussing. Attach a word document with your annotated bibliography for your 4 scholarly sources. Each annotated bibliographical entry should be 1-page long (typed, double spaced) that includes a short summary of the source, and one paragraph stating how the particular source will be useful for your thesis. (15points)
Friday, October 30th through Monday, November 9th: peer reviews on work in progress: students will work in groups to offer each other feedback. We will debrief on Tuesday, November 10th during our synchronous class time! Peer review feedback will count towards your attendance and participation for the course, so please take it seriously!
November 9th – 13th 10-15min Mandatory Individual Meetings with me this week. Be sure you sign up for a time slot.
Friday, November 20: Final Paper Due via blackboard by 5pm.
ASSIGNMENT: To help build your critical thinking and writing skills as well as fulfill the writing intensive and interdisciplinary components of the course, you will write a research paper of 5-7 pages that will offer a gendered analysis of a single work of art from any time period. While the focus of our course will be on women artists, you are welcome to choose a work created by any artist so long as you are analyzing it through a gendered lens. If you choose a work we have already covered in class, be aware I will expect your analysis to expand beyond what we have discussed. Once you choose a work, you will conduct in-depth research in order to build a strong thesis argument. Your thesis must be clearly stated and link the work to key issues of gender and representation. Your paper should include relevant research from both of the following categories: internal evidence (related directly to the work or comparison works, and consisting of a close stylistic and/or iconographic analysis – i.e. how the work looks like, so formal elements) and external evidence (related to contextual issues, which would include a consideration of the larger contexts in which the work was made). You are required to cite a minimum of four different scholarly sources, and should incorporate at least one or two works of art into your analysis for comparative purposes. The comparative works do not need to be by the same artist as your primary work.
PLEASE NOTE: if you include two different biographies of the artist only one will count toward your minimum of four scholarly sources. Throughout the semester you have engaged in reading different types of articles and writing response papers. This short research paper is meant for you to apply the writing
and reading skills you have acquired over the last two months of the semester by closely analyzing and synthesizing the central arguments in various primary and secondary source texts.

FORMAT: your paper should be 5-7 pages long (EXCLUDING title page, image(s), bibliography) and should be double spaced, using 11pt font and 1″ (inch) margins. Your paper must include images of the main work or works at the end of the paper (do not insert images in the body of the paper) with full image captions underneath them (artist, title, date, medium etc.).
The title page for your paper should include the following in this order: a. Your name
b. Title of your paper
c. Date you turned in your paper
d. The following information on the work of art you are writing your paper on: Artist’s name, Tile of the work (in italics), Date of the work (when it was created) and Medium.
The color images of your works should be attached to the end of the paper. Images should not be inserted within the text of the paper. Image pages do not count as part of the page count.
You will format your paper using Chicago Manual of Style, 16th edition. Go here for a Citation Quick Guide: http://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/tools_citationguide.html Use this guide to format your endnotes and bibliography. You will lose points if you do not format your sources accordingly. Do not use MLA style and no in text citations. Art Historians use Chicago Manual of Style. Use only endnotes to cite specific source mentioned in the text. Use bibliography for citing all of your sources. Both endnotes and bibliography must be formatted according to Chicago Manual of Style – see link above!

What is a thesis statement?
– A thesis statement helps organize your paper from beginning to end.
– A thesis statement is one – three sentences that appear at/near the beginning of your paper that clearly state the parameters and focus of the paper.
– The key idea(s)/argument(s) in your thesis statement should form the basic structure of your paper, so key words/phrases from the thesis statement should appear through your paper as it develops.
– The conclusion of the paper should restate the goals and key ideas of the thesis and the conclusion you have reached about them.
This thesis statement should tell me in one – three sentences what you intend to focus on in your paper. Your thesis statement can be integrated into your introductory paragraph of your essay. It does not need to be “stand alone” – indeed, a sophisticated essay will incorporate it into the body of the initial paragraph.
The thesis statement may, in general, answer a question like these: What might the meaning of this work be? What is the message that this work or artist sends to the viewer? What is this work all about? The thesis statement is an important element. It sets the tone for the entire paper, and sets it apart from being a merely descriptive paper.
When grading, emphasis will be placed on your ability to conduct research evidenced by the scholarly sources you were able to identify, critical thinking, analytical writing skills, how closely you have

LOOKED at the object and translated your observations into written form, how closely you have engaged with scholarly sources in order to both synthesize the respective author’s argument and support your own thesis and the ability to incorporate feedback from your work-in-progress presentation.
General Instructions for all papers
Requirements
** All papers must be typed using Times New Roman, doubled spaced, with standard 1” (inch) margins and must be proofread before submitting. You must use 11-point font. Do NOT add extra spaces between paragraphs.
** All academic papers must include and introduction and a conclusion, and should be well constructed (When I grade your paper I will be looking for these components!) Women in Art ARTH-313
** If you plagiarize, fail to include a bibliography or footnote citations in any of your papers when using any outside sources (including textbooks and museum wall-text), the paper will be dropped one letter grade.
If you use the words of another writer without acknowledging that writer it is considered plagiarism.
If you use the ideas of another writer without acknowledging that writer it is considered plagiarism. As I
read your paper, I will be asking “How does he or she know this information?”
If you plagiarize (ie. cut and paste from an on-line site, etc.), you will fail the assignment and be turned in to the Dean’s office for academic integrity.
Common mistakes
** Titles of visual works are ALWAYS italicized. (The Kritios Boy is a statue from ancient Greece.) Titles are not put in quotation marks.
**The first time an artist is mentioned it is proper to utilize both the artist’s first and last name. Any other mention of the artist should be by her or his last name.
**You use an apostrophe for possession, not for simple plurals.
A common mistake is the use of the words it is in a paper (it’s=it is; its=of it (possessive).
** Proper nouns are capitalized, not regular nouns. The Baltimore Museum of Art is capitalized. The word museum is not. The words paint, paintings, artist, sculpture, marble, etc. are not proper nouns and are not capitalized.
** The abbreviation of the Metropolitan Museum of Art is Met, not MET. Capitalizing all of the letters is only used for acronyms such as AIDS, which is an acronym for Auto Immune Deficiency Virus. The abbreviation for the Museum of Modern Art is MoMA, not MOMA.
** Watch the verb tense. It is difficult to decide which tense is appropriate when writing about an art historical object. The making of the object happened in the past, yet most of the objects are still tangible in the present. It is also easy to make the mistake of switching between the past and the present when
writing an art history paper. Choose a tense and stick with it. Ask for assistance if you have any confusion.
** Either write in the first person (I, we) or the third person (he/she/it, etc.). Do NOT use second person (you) in an academic paper.
** All punctuation is INSIDE quotation marks: blah blah blah.” NOT: blah blah blah”.
** Indent, block, and single-space quotations longer than three lines (no quotation marks are used
for indents).
II. Work-in-progress Presentation with accompanying annotated bibliography word document-
- – Visual aids: You will show images of your works, and you are encouraged to bring in other images that are relevant to your discussion. You will place your thesis statement in a PPT slide. Your thesis should be clearly stated by this point.
