Research paper:
Students are required to submit an original research paper based on their assigned and approved topic area. The paper will be about eight pages in length for Option 2A and about five pages in length for Option 2B. Both page lengths are excluding title page, references, and appendices. Students working with a partner (Option 1A) will submit one paper and deliver one presentation with both names on the products and will receive the same grade for the products. Likewise, if your name is on a team paper you accept responsibility for the paper. Papers submitted in this course cannot be (or have been) submitted in another course for credit without the permission of both instructors. Students are expected to do all research/writing for his/her/their paper. Students are encouraged to exchanged ideas and resources for their papers. This type of collaboration is authorized and encouraged. The due date for all papers is NOV 6 by the start of class submitted as a Word or pdf file via Moodle. In fairness to all students, late papers will be penalized 10

-1-

points per day (everyday). For the team paper, only one copy of the paper is required.

Topics and theoretical application:

Each paper must also integrate a criminological theory connection to their topic. While many of the potential topics below can have several criminological theories, it is best to select one or two theories rather than providing minimal attention to several theories. Specifically, the criminological theory would be identified from Part 2 (chaps 4-9) of our required text Siegel Criminology: The Core.

Citations:

For the paper, please note the following information. To demonstrate an adequate level of understanding of the material and to support your statement of purpose, it is important to cite specific works, findings, and ideas. It is equally important that you give credit to the original author (or other authors) whose work you are referencing. Documentation for all sources is required. For this paper, a minimum of 10 scholarly academic sources are required for both Options 2A and 2B. Scholarly academic sources will include peer reviewed journal articles, .gov/pdf reports (different from a .gov website), books, chapters in an edited book. If you have questions about a particular source, we can connect during Zoom office hours. For this assignment, do not use quotes over 40 words.

Proper citation is necessary so that you do not intentionally or inadvertently pass off the work of others as your own. As a rule, every source listed in the reference section of the paper should be found referenced within the body of the paper. Every source used to write the paper should be referenced within the body of the paper (not necessarily a verbatim quotation), and also listed in the reference section of the paper. Failure to properly document sources within the paper may result in a grade a zero for the assignment regardless of the amount of time and effort spent to produce it. A good point to keep in mind is that the writing process is one of the learning objectives for the course. If you have questions about referencing and citations, please feel free to ask me about it.
