Instructions for the Final Assignment: Research Paper
The field of “play” is broad and multifaceted. There are hundreds of studies published in the last seven years in which researchers measured some aspect of play and linked it to child performance or child aptitude or child success.
There are studies in which “play” is an intervention and the researchers collected data to prove that given a particular “play intervention” children achieved success more often than children who did not have the “play intervention”.
Every study defines the play variables differently.
Every study assesses or measures the play variables differently.

For your research paper, please select a play topic of interest to you in which you will find writing the paper valuable to you and your career.
Your final paper is based on the Topic Paper (Due October 13th), and will include 15 Peer-reviewed empirical articles from the past 7 years (2013-2020). These 15 articles are the same 15 articles in your Reference List (Due October 24th) and your Annotated Bibliographies (Due in October and November).

The Research Paper requirements:
- You will extend your Topic Paper into a full Literature Review on your Topic.
- Your Final Paper will use the information you learned in the 15 peer-reviewed empirical research studies on your Topic (General Topic and Subtopic) that you read over the course of the semester.
- You must cite a minimum of 10 of the Research Articles in your paper AND in your Reference List.
- Research Articles cited must have:
- Publication dates for the research studies can span 2013 to 2020, not any time earlier unless approved.
- All the articles must be from a peer-reviewed academic journal.
- All the articles must be empirical (Qualitative, Quantitative or Experimental)
Your Final Paper will have the SAME PARTs as your TOPIC PAPER. As a matter of fact, you may be able edit your topic paper to work as the Introduction and some of the literature review.
Please include the following parts in your Final Paper:
Introduction:
- The introduction should be designed to attract the reader’s attention and explain the focus of the research. You will introduce your overview of the topic, your main points of information, and why this subject is important. You can introduce the current understanding and background information about the topic. Toward the end of the introduction, you add your thesis statement, and explain how you will provide information to support your research questions. This provides the purpose, focus, and structure for the rest of the paper.

Thesis Statement:
- Most papers will have a thesis statement or main idea and supporting facts/ideas/arguments. State your main idea (something of interest or something to be proven or argued for or against) as your thesis statement, and then provide supporting facts and arguments. A thesis statement is a declarative sentence that asserts the position a paper will be taking. It also points toward the paper’s development. This statement should be both specific and arguable. Generally, the thesis statement will be placed at the end of the first paragraph of your paper. The remainder of your paper will support this thesis.
Literature Review:
- The purpose of the literature review is to describe past important research and how it specifically relates to the research thesis. It should be a synthesis of the previous literature and the new idea being researched. The review should examine the major theories related to the topic to date and their contributors. It should include all relevant findings from credible sources, such as academic books and peer-reviewed journal articles. You will want to:
- Explain how the literature helps the researcher understand the topic.
- Try to show connections and any disparities between the literature.
- Identify new ways to interpret prior research.
- Reveal any gaps that exist in the literature.
- Be sure to use all THREE of your references here!
- All intext references should use APA citation.
- Strong academic writing look like:
“Given the correlation between sophisticated language abilities and later literacy success (Claessens, Duncan, & Engel 2009; Dickinson & Porche, 2011; Storch & Whitehurst, 2002), this move appears to ensure equal access to academic language for all children as well as accountability from early childhood programs, such as Head Start and Universal/Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten.”

- Do NOT write the article title in your literature review, you only need the authors’ last names and date.
- Do NOT forget to give credit to the author (always put (last name, year) after important ideas.

Discussion:
- The purpose of the discussion is to interpret and describe what you have learned from your research. Make the reader understand why your topic is important. The discussion should always demonstrate what you have learned from your readings (and viewings) and how that learning has made the topic evolve, especially from the short description of main points in the introduction.
- Explain any new understanding or insights you have had after reading your articles and/or books. Paragraphs should use transitioning sentences to develop how one paragraph idea leads to the next. The discussion will always connect to the introduction, your thesis statement, and the literature you reviewed, but it does not simply repeat or rearrange the introduction. You want to:
- Demonstrate critical thinking, not just reporting back facts that you gathered.
- If possible, tell how the topic has evolved over the past and give it’s implications for the future.
- Fully explain your main ideas with supporting information.
- Explain why your thesis is correct giving arguments to counter points.
Conclusion:
- A concluding paragraph is a brief summary of your main ideas and restates the paper’s main thesis, giving the reader the sense that the stated goal of the paper has been accomplished. What have you learned by doing this research that you didn’t know before? What conclusions have you drawn? You may also want to suggest further areas of study, improvement of research possibilities, etc. to demonstrate your critical thinking regarding your research.

Getting Started:
The first step for this assignment is linked to the Annotated Bibliographies and your Topic Paper. Re-read your Topic Paper and edit your Introduction based on the new information you gathered in your Annotated Bibliographies. (Basically, your Topic Paper is your Introduction).
Consider sorting the information from your Annotated Bibliographies into sections/subtopics. You should synthesize what you have learned in your Annotated Bibliographies.
We will “turn in” the Final Paper TWICE: A Rough Draft (on November 24th) and the Final Research Paper (December 8th).
Rough Draft:
Due: November 24th
A rough draft of your paper is due to your professor (submitted on Canvas) AND to a classmate (you may choose someone or you may ask me to choose someone).
The rough draft should be at least 80% finished (you should have the Introduction; Thesis Statement/Research Question; and Literature Review (Synthesis of the research).

Peer Review:
Due (to Peer and Professor): December 1st
You will receive a rough draft from one of your classmates via canvas mail or your UCF mail. You will be required to proof read their rough draft and provide comments. You should edit for APA style format, clarity and content (where you can). You will write a 300 word response to your classmate AND edit (using green or red text) directly on the document they send you-
Your 300 word response will include: (1) A strength you found in their paper; (2) Something you learned by reading their paper; (3) One way to improve their paper.
You will return the paper and 300-word response to your classmate (with your name) AND you will submit your work on CANVAS. Your comments and Edits will be GRADED for effort.
Final Research Paper:
Due: December 8th:
Research Paper is due (no late submissions because it is your final examination). If you choose to turn it in late, you choose to fail the course.
I am releasing this assignment early so that throughout the remainder of the semester, I will guide you in your writing.
