HI 254 Final Exam Fall 2020

Final Exam: HI 254-001

Fall 2020

The exam is due on Monday, November 23 at 11:55 pm. No late papers will be accepted. Email me if you have an approved excuse to submit your exam late.

Please submit Part A and Part B separately on Moodle.

This is an open book exam. This puts an extra burden on you. It is absolutely crucial that you write in your own words. Do not lift anything from the web or from anywhere else without citing it properly. This is very important. I do not want to sound threatening – but I really want to avoid a most unpleasant situation later, so I am going to forewarn you: if you use someone else’s words without citing the source it is plagiarism, and I will file an Academic Misconduct report. Please see the NCSU statement on Academic Integrity.

You may form a group to study, but everyone must write the exam on their own.

Moodle will put the papers through the TurnItIn software. You should be familiar with this by now: if you submit early you will have the opportunity to withdraw your paper and resubmit if it finds similarities with other sources (on the web or in its library of digitized works) or grammatical errors.

PART A: The Essay (50 points). Choose One.

  • Think about your THESIS and your outline.
  • Include a title.
  • End with a good conclusion.
  • Approximately three pages (Times New Roman, 12 pt forn, 1.15 spacing, 1” margins)
  • Footnote properly
  1. (1)  The struggle for civil rights — the pursuit of equal justice for all citizens (including women, Blacks, Native Americans, immigrants, LGBTQ) – is a dominant theme of US history from 1890 to 2010. Looking back on everything we have studied this semester, select five turning points that helped lead to more equal justice for marginalized groups. Describe why you consider them turning points. Then analyze why and how they effected change. This is important: analyze how change happened. Consider material from the entire semester; you do not have to select moments affecting five different groups but you must chose turning points from five different decades.

    OR

  2. (2)  In 1890, the United States was a rising global power, and one hundred years later, it was the only superpower. How did this happen? To answer this question, I’d like you to think of it as a narrative in “five steps.” Choose five “steps” that led to “global superpowerdom.” A “step” could be a war, an economic event, a policy, a cultural event, etc. – really anything you think contributed to the rise of the United States as a global power. To convey the sweep of the narrative of the US rise to global superpowerdom, you must choose steps from five different decades and span most of the years we have studied (1890-2010).

PART B: The Cartoon Analysis (50 points). Choose Five.

Analyze five of the following seven cartoons. Your analysis should (1) pay attention to the details of the cartoon and (2) explain its historical context and (3) interpret its message.

Note that the comments about plagiarism above apply here as well.

Please submit this as a separate file (not with your essay) on Moodle. It, too, will be put through the TurnItin software, so it is to your advantage to submit early.

To clarify what I expect, here is an example of an analysis that would receive an “A.”

This is an example of an answer: This cartoon packs a lot of information and a biting commentary into a small space. Titled “Blind Leading the Blind,” it caricatures the presidents who led the United States into the war in Vietnam. At the beginning (left) is Eisenhower, sporting sunglasses (he does not see the situation clearly) and holding a golf club. (Ike played a lot of golf.) He is leaning toward his successor, Kennedy, and lightly pushing him forward. This refers to the fact that Eisenhower’s policy of supporting Diem and scuttling the elections in South Vietnam deepened US involvement there. Kennedy, also sporting shades, carries a cane (he had a bad back and often used a cane), and his feet are getting wet. He leans more heavily on Johnson than Eisenhower had leaned on him. This signifies Kennedy’s escalation of US involvement in Vietnam, sending approximately 17,000 military advisers there, while using Agent Orange, napalm, and counterinsurgency tactics. Johnson, still not seeing the situation clearly (wearing sunglasses), is ankle deep in the water and shoves Nixon forward, which refers to his dramatic deepening of the war in Vietnam by sending a half million US soldiers there. Nixon, although seeing the situation clearly, plunges into the quagmire. HI 254 Final Exam Fall 2020
