Analysis of a Live Musical Performance Assignment

Music Analysis of a Live Musical Performance: You must view and hear a live music event and turn in a four-page analysis of the concert (at least 1000 words); a photo ‘selfie’ must be taken of you viewing the live performance and must be digitally attached to your paper. The paper is due on Thursday, November 12. You may turn in your paper at any point during the semester in the form of a draft. The analysis must be of a live concert.

The live music event can be viewed on YouTube or some other streaming service, such as the college’s own Digital Theatre Plus (https://www.digitaltheatreplus.com/education/plays-and-productions), an online database located on the college’s library webpage. Digital Theatre Plus contains a number of live concerts in a number of different genres that will work well for the purposes of the assignment, including musicals, experimental music performances, and symphonic concerts. The choice of concerts ranges from opera, string quartets, symphonies, performance art, and various modern/post-modern compositions. To view the options, please type ‘Music’ in the search bar at the top of the screen on the Digital Theatre Plus webpage, where you will see about 110 options (incidentally, you will need to be signed into your MC account). Of those options, I ask that you choose one of the following to use for your live music event to complete the paper:

Analysis of a Live Musical Performance Assignment

-Stravinsky’s “Rite of Spring” (Modern)
-Ravel’s “Bolero” (Modern)
-Sarah Nicolls: Inside Out Piano (Post-Modern)
-This is Rattle (British Music from many periods, choose one) -Brahms’s Symphony No. 4 (Late Romanticism)
-Berlioz “Symphonie fantastique” (Early Romanticism) -Bernstein’s “Serenade” (Post-Modern)
-Verdi’s “Rigoletto” (Opera, Romanticism)

Please let me know which of the live music selections you would like to use. You can find information about each of these works on “Oxford Music Online”, which is on the library
database: https://www.oxfordmusiconline.com/. You will need this source to write your paper.

Steps to complete the paper: In your music analysis of the music performance, you are required to place the music you heard at the live event in an historical context by providing a description of the music as evidence of an historical style or genre, where the genre or style of the music represents a larger argument about society (i.e., what does the genre and its history say about society?). Some possible arguments for your paper include the increased influence of market forces on the quality or reception of the music, gender or race politics, ethics, technology, live audience experience vs. the self-directed music experience, and religious or political censorship. You MUST define all musical aspects of the genre you are analyzing, including instruments used, lyrics (if any), timbre, stylistic forms, pitch range, vocal register, dynamics, rhythms, tempos, melodies, harmonies, and sound space. You MUST discuss at least one song or musical composition in the context of your paper to serve as evidence of your overall analysis (do not just describe or list the elements—i.e., ask yourself why are certain elements found in a particular song and then answer what meaning do the elements have in your overall analysis of the genre). In other words, the music is the evidence for your argument. To help in the formation of your paper, a draft copy of the assignment submitted by a student last semester is currently on Moodle for

consultation purposes. The online music database Oxford Music Online MUST be used as a source in your paper to define the genre and listed in a bibliography in the correct format: http://www.library.manhattan.edu/login?url=http://www.oxfordmusiconline.com/
(see About Plagiarism and About Wikipedia below).

Analysis of a Live Musical Performance Assignment

Please keep in mind that this assignment is NOT a review or critique of what was good or bad in the performance or what makes this artist or musician “special” or unique, but an analysis of the music placed in a historical context, which is reflective of current concerns in society.

About Wikipedia and ‘Fan’ Sites: Good for a first ‘peak’, but NEVER use them as a source in your papers. The ONLY approved online source for use in your paper is Oxford Music Online (see Supplementary Online Sources above).

The Writing Center: The Manhattan College Writing Center (in the Student Commons) is designed to work with students in order to create a clear and polished essay (not write the essay for you).
