ENG 251 The Age of Epics Formal Essay

  1. Geary

Formal Essay

Purpose: This semester, we have spent several weeks reading and discussing Homer’s The Odyssey. As a companion text, I have asked you all to read Madeline Miller’s Circe, which retells a number of the events in the ancient epic while also shifting the point of view away from Odysseus. This essay will allow you to explore how similar and/or different the two narratives are.

ENG 251 The Age of Epics Formal Essay

Intended audience: You should assume that your audience consists of readers who are familiar with The Odyssey and are skeptical of modern interpretations of classic stories. These readers could be older than or the same age as you.

Getting started: To begin this essay, you will need to select at least 5-6 points of comparison or contrast that you plan to discuss. You might focus on characters, details of certain events, themes, or anything else that seems appropriate to you. Based on these points of comparison or contrast, you will develop a thesis that you intend to prove throughout your essay.

Opening paragraph: In your introduction paragraph, you will need to introduce both of the texts that you will discuss in the essay. As part of this paragraph, you can include a traditional thesis statement that introduces your line of reasoning. You can also use a thesis question instead. If you choose that option, you would be delaying your statement until the end of the essay. Choose the approach that you deem most appropriate for your vision for this document.

Organization: I recommend using the alternating method for organizing this comparison and contrast essay. In doing so, you would talk about a topic from The Odyssey and then talk about the same topic in Circe.

Textual evidence and citation: You will need to use direct quotation from The Odyssey and Circe to reinforce your ideas. No outside research is required; however, you may use credible secondary sources if you need them. All sources must be cited according to MLA guidelines: in-text citations and Works Cited page.

Tone: You can adopt either a formal or an informal tone for this essay. It should be appropriate for your intended audience. You may use “I” and singular “they” throughout the essay.

Assessment: This essay will be graded based on the following criteria and scored out of 100 possible points:

  1. Development of a thesis statement (question) that is debatable
  2. Development of a line of reasoning that supports the thesis
  3. Use of textual evidence from both works of literature
  4. Demonstrated knowledge of the literary works
  5. Ability to write analytically and avoid excessive summarization
  6. Accuracy of MLA formatting guidelines: in-text and Works Cited
  7. Grammatical clarity and accuracy
