HSC4800
Background:
HSC4800: Health Education Professional Development
Philosophy of Health Education & Promotion
In HSC3032 Foundations of Health Education and Promotion, Dr. Garcia-Guettler introduced HEB majors to “philosophy” as related to the Health Education and Promotion (HE/P) field. HEB majors defined key terms related to philosophy, discussed the importance for having a personal and an occupational philosophy, and identified the six prominent HE/P philosophies (behavior change, cognitive-based, decision-making, freeing/functioning, social change, and eclectic health education/promotion).
By the end of the course, HEB majors created their own HE/P philosophy.
Directions:
As seniors preparing for the final semester of undergraduate studies, pre-interns have completed nearly 45-credits of HEB coursework. With the completion of each course, HEB seniors have grown in their knowledge of and beliefs in HE/P. Consequently, the HE/P philosophy of each HEB senior should be further developed and defined. The HE/P philosophy should have also evolved to include a future career plans and how the HEB degree will impact the health of those around them.
Students will explain how their view of HE/P has evolved since beginning the major and discuss how they will incorporate the knowledge, skills and beliefs about health HSC4800
education/promotion to improve the quality of life of those around them (family, friends, patients, co- workers, community, etc.). Students will disclose how their personal quality of life has been impacted from learning about health education/promotion. And, students will detail their plan for how they will continue to make lasting impacts on the HE/P field.
Important Notes:
The HE/P Philosophy assignment will be completed in the format of a paper. The paper must conform to the rules and guidelines outlined in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (7th Edition). Students must include a title page and will include references (i.e., in-text citations and references page) as needed. Students should NOT include an abstract.
