BIO1120 Structural Anatomy & Physiology Body Systems Written Project

This project is worth 5% of the total course grade and a hard copy is due at the beginning of class on the specified date given by the instructor. If it is not turned in on time, please note that the late work is subject to a 50% reduction of the graded score per the course syllabus and student handbook. Please see the student handbook for PSI’s plagiarism policy.

Each student will choose an organ system of the human body and write an academic and scientific 3-4-page paper in third-person with the following criteria: ______________________________________________________________________________________________ Use listed headings

INTRODUCTION

A paragraph lead that explains what the paper discusses.

ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY

Explanation of the components of the chosen system and how it works. An ideal summary would consist of approximately 4 paragraphs. The Patton/Thibodeau text is a sound starting point (see below for reference guidelines). If a chosen body system is covered in class, it should be discussed in greater detail than the lecture so that a greater understanding of that system can be achieved. Please DO NOT simply use information provided in the class instruction on that topic.

EXERCISE

Discussion of which types of exercise or activities might be beneficial to the chosen system (e.g. stretching, strengthening, conditioning, aquatics, relaxation, etc.). Included should be what changes would occur in the system with exercise, whether the changes are positive or negative, the considerations to exercise in the presence of systematic problems or pathology, and the precautions to exercise (if any) to be heeded due to the system problem or pathology.

This section should focus on how exercise impacts the chosen body system NOT THE ENTIRE BODY. Specifics should be given regarding how the exercise impacts the system, including what structures are affected. Example #1: Stretching can increase the length of muscles and tendons, so when discussing the muscular system, the specific tissues that are changed should be identified and “how” they are changed during the stretching activity. Example #2: Some exercises can correct urinary system problems but only to specific tissues and organs within the urinary system, not affecting the entire system.

In general, some activities may not directly involve a system, but can have a positive or negative effect on aspects of a chosen system; these effects may also be included in the paper.

CONCLUSION

A paragraph closing the paper to tie up all topics discussed. Readers of the paper should gain a deeper knowledge of the chosen system and have a basic concept of the physiological effects of exercise on the system. The conclusion should summarize and highlight the new knowledge presented within the paper. __________________________________________________________________________________________________ The scoring rubric attached should be followed to optimize the points awarded for each section. The paper should be no less than 3 pages and no more than 4, excluding the title page and bibliography. The paper should be specific and complete in thought, but concise. It should be typed, include a title page, be double-spaced, and have standard margins with 12-point font. Improper spelling ang grammar are a deduction so the use of spell-checks and others to proofread (not for content) are highly suggested. Resources cited should include 3-5 texts (excluding the Patton/Thibodeau textbook) and a max of 2 internet sources. If internet sources are utilized, they must be peer-reviewed, academic, and accessible to instructor without cost or difficulty in locating. Use of PT sources such as the PT Journal are recommended. Interviews of PTs or PTAs are admissible, but they must be relevant, and the specifics of the interview must be provided to the instructor. Sources cited must be AMA format (see instructions from Intro to PT) in a bibliography at the end of the paper. Instructor available for guidance or questions, but not for proofreading or checking accuracy of content.
