In class, the black and red chips model was used to illustrate positive and negative numbers. Each black chip represents +1, each red chip represents -1, and a black and red chip together equals 0. With this model, we saw that there are infinitely many possible ways of illustrating each number.
1) For the following numbers, sketch four different types of sets of black and red chips to represent each number:
a. 0 b. 8 c. -4
In class, we also used the black and red chips model to represent operations of signed numbers.
2) Illustrate the following computations and answer using the black and red chips model. Remember that there is more than one way of representing each number. Do NOT alter any of the operations (making subtraction into addition or reversing the order of multiplication).
For each illustration, include the numerical answer using typical methods of computing signed numbers:
