MARK: 25% of your final grade
DUE DATE: December 3, 2020 at 8:30 am
LENGTH: 6 to 8 pages (1,500 – 2,000 words)
FORMAT: Typed and double-spaced with a minimum 12 point font in black ink
TOPIC
This is an analytical paper based on the readings, summaries, and lectures. Some research outside of class readings will be involved. You are required to write 6 to 8 pages with a properly formatted (MLA or Chicago style) bibliography.
OBJECTIVES
There are 2 main objectives of your paper:
1. To research and analyze ONE work by a Canadian artist that is currently on view at the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) or another art gallery in your locale. If you cannot go to an art gallery to see a Canadian artwork simply choose a Canadian artist that interests you.
Please reproduce an image of the artwork (small is fine) you discuss, accompanied by a caption that includes the artist’s name along with the title, dimensions and date(s) of the work.
Part of the essay is to conduct a visual analysis of the artwork. What does it look like? What is the scale? What materials are used? What draws your visual interest in the artwork? Why & how? Describe the composition of the artwork? What does it make you think, see & feel? How does it do this? Give concrete examples from the artwork.
Relate your visual description of the artwork to ONE of the essay topics below.
2. You will discuss the chosen artwork using ONE of the following broad questions related to the key topics in the course:
a) How does your chosen work fit into the history of art in Canada? How are these influences reflected in the actual artwork you have chosen? Connect this to your discussion of the artwork.
b) What is the role of abstraction in the work being discussed? How does the artist contribute to abstraction in Canadian art? Use specific examples from the artwork.
c) How does the painter’s use of colour reflect the themes explored in the work? Are there historical precedents for colour choices that relate to other artistic movements that may have been influential on the artist (Japonisme, spiritualism, the Automatistes, Fauvism, Impressionism, Cubism)?
GUIDELINES
The main purpose of this assignment is to produce a research essay in which you develop a clear and well-stated argument about the work of art you are addressing, which uses the question to frame your approach. You will support this argument using the readings, summaries, and discussionfrom class. Outside research is encouraged where necessary, but be sure to use material of scholarly value. You will be marked on the quality of your research material. Special attention should be paid to the quality and format of your paper.
WRITING STYLE
When writing the paper, you should seek to express yourself in as clear a manner as possible. Whenever possible, try to restate the ideas of other thinkers in your own words. Always identify and footnote any passages taken from sources consulted and footnote ideas you have taken from other authors. Your own ideas and opinions should always be indicated through the use of the first person, “I”. For example, “I think that the comparison of the two art objects raises the following issues.” Don’t try to sound smart! Communicate in a clear and concise manner.
EVALUATION
The emphasis of this assignment is on your ability to analyze and express your own ideas about the artist’s or designer’s work you are discussing in relation to the themes of the course. You will be assessed on the appropriateness of your choice of artist or designer, the depth and synthesis of your research, the analysis of the works you are examining, and your ability to organize your thoughtsclearly. Marks will be deducted if basic grammar and spelling are poor.
DOCUMENTATION OF SOURCES
All sources must be properly cited and a bibliography attached. Papers that do not properly document sources will receive a zero.
If you use an Internet site, you must cite the full URL and the date accessed. A research paper based solely on Internet sites is not acceptable. You must also include research from the books and articles available through the library and its databases. All sources consulted must be listed in your bibliography, including those that are not directly cited as footnotes.
