ENGL 1203 Literary Analysis Assignment
ENGL 1203, Literary Analysis Outline
Use the outline template for literary analysis journals each week. There are three major components: introduction, body, and conclusion.
Introduction – Your introduction should include the following elements:
- Hook – attention grabbing first sentences
- Background information – the title and author of whatever work you are
analyzing
- Thesis Statement – a one sentence explanation of what your analysis is going to
be about
ENGL 1203 Literary Analysis Assignment - Body – your body paragraphs need to include the following information:
Summary of work – this is important! Not only does your summary show your knowledge of the work, but it enlightens the reader as to what this piece of work is about. Do not assume that the reader is going to know what you are talking about. Approach this essay as if your reader knows nothing about this work, and it is your job to inform them.
Analysis – this section has two vital components that work together – your opinion of the work(claim) + text evidence to back up your opinion. You must use at least two elements of literature in your analysis.
Your opinion* of the work (claim) can cover a wide range of ideas including but not limited to:
- Did you like this piece? Why or why not?
- Opinion of the figurative language used in the piece
- What was the message the author was trying to convey? Did you like that
message?
- What is the universal theme of the work? What lessons can it teach the reader?
Your claim must be corroborated with evidence (examples) from the text. This evidence can be quoted, summarized, or paraphrased, but it should serve the purpose of giving credence to your opinion. It proves your point.
Conclusion – Wrap up your thoughts, restate your thesis
*It is important to note that while a literary analysis is your opinion about a piece of writing, the rules of academic writing still apply. Therefore, your opinions and insight must be phrased with formal writing and no personal pronouns.
