Dear SOCI206 Students – Congratulations!!!! The vast majority of you have completed the first step of the final paper, creating an annotated bibliography. While you are completing the next step of this assignment, writing a rough draft, I want you to keep a few things in mind:
Citation format counts. There are guidelines for this on the assignment and on Black Board under Course Content– so there’s no excuse for not including the page #. I have to see how long your articles are, what year they were published, what journal, etc. If I can’t see this information – I have to take points off (as few as possible though).
Choose your sources strategically. Remember that this class focuses on city change and city life – there is a lot to draw on from Hutter – and you’ve already read and written about most of it. DO NOT cut and paste from prior assignments – BBD will flag that immediately – but draw from the IDEAS. That is the most important thing – a clear connection to course material.
Write with JOY! One of the reasons I chose this assignment for you – and one of the reasons I LOVE this class – is that I love city life. I don’t care if I’m in a city in Peru or in mid-town Manhattan (sigh!) – or in Brooklyn or the Bronx. I absolutely love exploring cities – going into random shops and restaurants – talking to local people – enjoying the sights and sounds – the music + food – of city life! Whether you explore crime and homelessness, murals in city neighborhoods, or gentrification and street vendors – it should be something you are really interested in. I want you to explore your topic with genuine curiosity – and see what you find. Some of you are already well on your way + I know you all can do it!!
Ask for help – I am here to help you with your sources and your focus. Several of you have emailed me your ideas and I think we’ve worked together well to find articles you are interested in and want to explore! So please contact me – a.s.a.p. if you need help! You are not bothering me and I’m not too busy. I think this part is really fun!
Use the assignment as a guide – Sometimes, research can be overwhelming – and it is hard to know what to include, how to organize everything – that is why I offer an outline for you to follow on the assignment. Can you deviate from this? Sure! But if you are having trouble fitting everything in – use it as a guide.
So – great job so far – and please reach out with any questions!
Hi Casey- The Stonewall riots are very interesting and important and I think you could make a connection to urban sociology by discussing particular city neighborhoods and issues of inclusion. You don’t choose any academic sources though, only a sentence or two for each source, and the connection to course material is not clear here.
