Impact of Military spending over Social Welfare and it’s Repercussions after Social Media
[ad_1]
Question; Impact of military spending over social welfare and it’s repercussions after social media
Possible case study;
Countries with high social media usage/impact.
States with considerable difference in military spending/social spending ratios.
There is a significant increase in military tensions over different regions. States historically and currently spend considerable amount of their national budget on armament in affiliation to their military pacts, regional positions, and security concerns. In this aspect it is seen that ‘’Guns and butter’’ argument is a long-standing debate. If we consider that introduction of social media stimulated increased awareness and reactive societies that create considerable impact on state policies on certain cases. Addition of ‘’social media effect’’ to the system; public reaction, with regards to their social welfare status, on military spending and operations can be analyzed. Focusing on regional, cultural and regime type differences on social media impact can increase the depth of analysis and distinguish the differences.
CONTENT REQUIREMENTS
INTRODUCTION: You should introduce the final version of yout research question. Write it directly and openly. It can even be the title of your assignment. Discuss the theoretical/empirical relevance/importance of your question – by referring to the prospective contribution of your research. You should be clear about the intent of your research: case-oriented, descriptive, explanatory, exploratory, variable-oriented…etc. In a problem-driven research you should present the conceptualization (definitition/explanation) of your explanandum. In a single-case design, you have to tell us why one should be interested in that particular case academically.
LITERATURE REVIEW: Once you feel that you understood the general discussions and existing contributions in the related literature you should summarize the general outlook. Remember, “real academic discussion” is among an international community of scholars. So, only reading journal articles and books written in Turkish will not help you at all. A literature review is not a list of “who said what?”. You should engage with these academic writings in a critical fashion – by paying attention to the theoretical diversity so that you can compare and contrast weaknesses and strengths of these theoretical frameworks. Theoretical discussion in social sciences is of essential importance– you should be able to discuss the analytical leverage of the concepts which you refer to to explain the case or the problem. In sum, literature review is an integral component of all research (designs), it shows how you are informed by the existing research and ongoing theoretical discussion.
RESEARCH DESIGN: YOU WILL NOT DO THE RESEARCH. YOU WILL JUST PRESENT US A DESIGN – THEREFORE YOUR DESIGN CAN BE ALMOST IDEAL (Suppose, you have a generous budget, required technical skills and ample time). Research design should include:
- (IF YOU ADOPT A DEDUCTIVE APPROACH) a set of theoretically informed hypotheses – tentative answers to your research question (Causal effects which you expect to observe – IV -> DV; negative or positive relationship)
- your methodological preference (qualitative or quantitative) and your justification for it -i.e. why you choose that method instead of another. Archival research, fieldwork, content analysis, regression analysis…etc.
- (In a variable-oriented hypotheticodedutive research) Tell us about your operationalization of the dependent and main independent variables – how are you going to measure them? How would you operationalize war occurrence, support for extreme right parties and democracy level? What type of variable are they? Nominal or interval variable?
o your unit of analysis (e.g. states, dyad-years, neighborhoods, political parties, individuals…etc.)
o THE MODEL WHICH YOU WILL APPLY (LOGISTIC OR LINEAR REGRESSION), WHY?
- IF THIS IS GOING TO BE A SMALL-N DESIGN: FOR INSTANCE, IN A COMPARATIVE DESIGN, YOU SHOULD JUSTIFY CASE SELECTION, IS THAT AN MSSD OR MDSD, WHY? (NECESSARY FOR INDUCTIVE APPROACH!!!)
- Regardless of the data analysis method you should present your potential data sources (archives, datasets, indices, interviews, survey data… etc.).
REFERENCES: Systematic referencing is a must for academic writing. Therefore, you have to have in-text citations for contributions which you are referring to in the main text and additionally you have to have a references/bibliography list at the end of your main text. Use APA style for citations and do it properly. References should be ordered alphabetically in your list. A handout is available on Uzak – for months.
LANNGUAGE STYLE AND FORMAT REQUIREMENTS
ULU and GUC students can write the paper in English or Turkish. This is not a language class, so if you do not feel comfortable with writing in English, do not do it. MIS students have to write all their papers in English.
The text should be original -in the sense that it is not a collection of some “copy-paste” material. Your final submission (at the end of the trimester) will go through some originality check. Uncited ideas and excerpts “borrowed” from somebody else (i.e. plagiarism) will be penalized severely.
Pay attention to the clarity, proper use of terminology and coherence.
Use Times New Roman (12 pt.), 1.5 line spacing in Word. Use bold characters for section headings.
Write your name and student number on page 1 (upper left corner is fine).
If you studied in a group write the names and student numbers of all group members. Any one of the group members may upload your assignment on behalf of the others.
You are going to submit your assignment as a Word document (Both doc and docx files are allowed.)
Expected length: 2000 words (excluding references)
