You are about to sit a formal assessment and the regulations contained in the Code of Practice
on Academic Integrity apply. You are expected to undertake your Assessments with Academic
Integrity and in doing so have the following responsibilities:

Test or Written Examination.
In addition you should be aware of the following items regarding misconduct contained in the
Code of Practice:
• Copying from another Student: Students must not copy or attempt to copy from another
Student’s work.
• Obtaining, or attempting to obtain, access to an unseen Assessment: Students must not
obtain or access, or attempt to obtain or access, an unseen Assessment e.g. Written
Examination questions, or Class Test question(s), except where this has been expressly
agreed with your School. This includes sharing copies of quizzes and assignments from
Canvas with other students.
• Personation and Impersonation: Students must not be involved in an arrangement
whereby another party undertakes the Assessment on behalf of the Student.
• Non-Permitted Communication: Students must not communicate, or attempt to
communicate, with another party during the Class Test or Written Examination. This
includes all discussion of the Class Test or Written Examination with other students and
any external advisor.
Paper Instructions and Grading Criteria:
INSTRUCTIONS
1 There are five questions here, but students should answer only ONE of these. The
answer will be an essay of 1,500 words (+ or – 10%), excluding references/bibliography from
the word count. The essay should be prepared as a Word document.
2. To avoid the dangers of plagiarism, you must use quotation marks where appropriate,
cite your sources, and place these in the list of references at the end. You must absolutely
avoid using answers produced by other students or using shared answers. There is detailed
guidance on plagiarism available on the Canvas home page for the Management Programmes
for 2020/21.
Question Paper
USING EXAMPLES, answer ONE question ONLY.
1. What is organisation? Explain with examples the differences between hierarchy
and heterarchy as patterns of organisation.
2. At the turn of the twentieth century the sociologist Max Weber identified
“bureaucracy” as a distinct type of organisation. With examples, critically evaluate
Weber’s theory of bureaucracy.
3 .It is sometimes suggested that “Fordism” provided an important pattern of
organisation that was copied by businesses across different sectors during the
twentieth century. With examples, explain what Fordism is, and consider what
influence if any it still has upon business organisation.
4. Compare and contrast “systems theory” and “social conflict theory” as two
approaches to the understanding organisation. Using examples, explain which of
these two approaches you find to be the more persuasive.
5. The concept of “learning” can be understood in different ways. With examples,
compare the different understandings of “learning”, and explain how these are
related.
