Week 5 – Discussion 2
Social Skills
Within Week Four, you explored positive behavioral supports, selected social skills, and practiced writing goals. For this assignment, you will combine this information to practice writing replacement behavior goals. This assignment supports your achievement of Course Learning Outcome 3 and 4, and the MASE Program Learning Outcome 7.
According to Cohen and Spenciner (2009), recent research suggests that when “young children at risk or with emotional disabilities receive structured training in social skills in combination with teacher training in behavior management and instruction of parents in positive discipline, there are socially important outcomes years later” (p. 260).
For this discussion, you will continue to focus on writing goals, as you have done in the first discussion for this week. However, the goals for this assignment are for replacement behavior.
Initial Post: Post an initial response that addresses the following areas:
Using the attached Goal Writing for Replacement Behavior document,
• Write two replacement behavior goals that align with your first discussion goals for increasing positive behaviors.
• Write two replacement behavior goals that align with your first discussion goals for decreasing problem behaviors.
Next, in a paragraph,
• Identify the disability you are focusing on for this course. The disability is dyslexia.
• Reflect on your experiences filling in the Replacement Behavior form. What challenges did you experience? How would the form be useful in the classroom (for the special education professional and general education teacher)? What contributions do functional assessment make to determining replacement behaviors?
Guided Response: Answer any follow-up questions your instructor may have for you after reading your post. Read your classmates’ posts and respond to at least three of them. Read at least two of your peers’ replacement behavior goals and provide feedback based on their goals. Feedback may include suggestions such as ways to make the behavior more objective, conditions more specific, and/or proficiency expectations more reasonable. If you have dealt with a similar situation as the ones described, please offer your personal experience as well.
Though two replies is the basic expectation, for deeper engagement and application of the material, you are encouraged to provide responses to any comments or questions others have given to you (including your instructor) before Day 7. This ongoing engagement in the discussion will deepen the conversation while providing opportunities to demonstrate your content expertise, critical thinking, and real-world experiences with this topic.
