Contextual Analysis Essay Assignment
This module focuses on our reading of the A Brief Account of the Destruction of the Indies. This was a letter composed to the King of Spain (1542, published 1552) to document the human rights violations committed against the Native peoples of the Americas at the hands of Spanish conquistadors and colonists.
For the Contextual Analysis Assignment, each individual will focus on some historical reference that is made within their assigned section and, using an accurate, trustworthy source (or sources) explaining that particular historical reference, will compose 2 – 4 paragraph pieces of prose of 450 – 550 words in length that answers the following three questions:
- What person, place, thing, or event referenced within your assigned section are you identifying for analysis?
- What is important to explain about this person, place, thing, or event so that a contemporary reader of this text would fully understand the reading in its historical context?
- How does the context you have identified and explained inform and develop our understanding and interpretation of this book?
