Have a great week!

Best,

Professor Hamilton

The schoolboy is a child who managed to win all the marbles in his school. This amazed his opponents, and they decided to observe him know the secret behind his success. When they admeasured and followed him, they thought that he must have had a guessing principle. Dupin is among the people who have applied the school boy’s code. This paper will therefore illustrate how Dupin uses this principle.

The purloined letter is a letter that the minister steals from the queen for political blackmail. The minister does this in the queen’s presence, but the lady cannot do anything since screaming will attract people’s attention. The contents in it are very confidential, and if they become known by the public, they might tarnish the royal family’s name, which will affect her politically.

The police are doing their best to recover the letter, but they seem to be chasing the wind (Poe, 1987). It even gets to a point where they dress casually and attack the minister, for they assume that he must be having the letter with him always. The problem here is that they are only using experience and established thoughts. None of them thinks of doing something differently or rather applying new investigation methods. Fortunately, or unfortunately, when Dupin figures out that they cannot find the letter, he recovers it and turns the political tables on the thief.

Sometime later, Dupin explains how he managed to get the letter. He agrees that according to their principles, the cops have the skills to investigate(“Poe’s Short Stories: “The Purloined Letter” (1844) | SparkNotes”, 2021). He explains this by describing a young boy who plays “even and odd.” This is a game where the players have to guess whether the toys held by their counterparts are even or odd. When a person makes a wrong guess, he/she losses her toy. The boy described by Dupin succeeds in this game because he uses the knowledge of his opponent. He uses the facial expression of his opponent anytime he faces a challenge. The purpose of imitation is to understand the thoughts and feelings of his opponent. Understanding his opponent makes him make correct guesses. Dupin laments that the police use their knowledge instead of understanding the minister, so they do not find the letter. They base their search on the places where they would have hidden it.

According to Dupin, the minister is smarter than the police, for he can hide the letter in a place where they might not think of searching (Poe, 1958). To retrieve it, he first recounts the visit to the apartment of the minister. From the mantelpiece are groups of visiting cards hanging. Besides the cards is a letter whose exterior is different from the one described by the perfect. Nevertheless, Dupin decides to get it, for he realizes that it has been folded back on itself. He organizes how the minister will be distracted so that he can get an opportunity to pick. After pocketing it, he replaces it with a fake letter.
