500 words writing of answers base on ethos pathos logos

The article “Why Rhetoric?” introduces three new rhetorical terms:

  • ethos
  • pathos
  • logos

Together, these terms make up the rhetorical triangle.

We have also learned the following rhetorical terms, some of which are reviewed in “Why Rhetoric?” and some are not:

  • the rhetorical situation, including
    • exigence
    • audience
    • kairos
  • the canons of rhetoric
    • invention & selection
    • arrangement
    • style
    • delivery

At this point, my hope is that when you read that list you had some idea of what all these terms mean. If not, please reread “Why Rhetoric?”, review my slideshow on rhetoric (called “Introduction to Rhetoric” which you can find under the “Rhetoric & the Writing Process” tab), and reread WA2 & WA4, where we worked with rhetoric. If you are still confused, you could also read the optional text “What is Rhetoric?” which is under the “Course Readings” tab.

Inkshed 4 is a review of all these rhetorical terms. I would like you to name and/or write a short description of all of the following rhetorical features in Anne Lamott’s article “Shitty First Drafts.”

Feel free to do these questions in any order.

  1. What is the main idea of “Shitty First Drafts”?
  2. Who is a likely audience for the article?
  3. What effect(s) does Lamott want to have on that audience? (This is a question about exigence or purpose.)
  4. Does kairos play a role in this article? Why or why not?
  5. What genre constraints does she have? (Remember that this is creative nonfiction–we have talked about what genre rules there are for creative nonfiction.) Does she follow those genre constraints?
  6. Find one example of each of ethos, logos, and pathos. (In practice, the same sentence might do two or more of ethos, logos, and pathos, so if you find a piece of pathos but think it might also be logos, you are probably right, and you could use it as an example for either.)
  7. Make one comment about invention and selection. (For example, you might comment on which parts of the writing process she did not focus on and why or what other information about writing she choose to include and why.)
  8. Make one comment about arrangement. What order do her ideas come in? Where are the main ideas and where are the details? (Be very careful that you don’t just summarize her content here. Try to find a pattern. You might separate the article into beginning, middle, and end.)
  9. Make one comment about style. This might be a comment about tone or it might be a comment about when she uses long sentences and when she uses short sentences.
  10. Make one comment about delivery. What did you first think of the article the first time you opened the PDF?

The purpose of Inkshed 4 is for you to practice looking at the rhetoric of a piece of writing. In your paper 2, you will be discussing your own rhetoric.
