Write a 10-page paper (Times New Roman, 12, double-spaced) around the concept of “idealism†drawn from two movies: Solaris (Steven Soderberghâ€s 2002 film) and Blade Runner (1982). What do they have in common, how are they different? What can we learn that is related to our world today? The paper must have a clear argument, coherent structure, and include proper footnotes and bibliography.
1. Title (Come up with a provocative and interesting title);
2. Introduction (This will be an original, captivating introduction, which will open your essay before you move on to the statement of your thesis);
3. Thesis Statement (What is the central argument of your essay? What do you want to say in this paper? What question do you want to answer? Be as concise and specific as possible. A clear thesis statement is usually introduced in one coherent sentence);
4. Questions (What questions will you answer in order to support your overall thesis? Every thesis statement encompasses several sub-arguments or
sub-questions, which together add up to a convincing argument. Consider how you are going to structure your overall argument);
5. Donâ€t get lost in irrelevant summaries. Your paper should move back and forward between your thesis, your sources, and the themes you are developing;
6. Analysis (Address your film(s) in terms of their salience for your argument, which includes describing certain scenes; highlighting specific formal elements (sound, cinematography, mise én scene, etc.,); focusing on characters or other narrative components, or some combination of such elements that assist you in advancing your points);
6. Works cited (from the syllabus, from own research, such as reviews, popular press articles, industry marketing and advertisements). Engage critically with all sources, and do not just repeat or summarize their arguments;
7. Conclusion (Do not just end your essay with your last point, but wrap everything up in an original and convincing conclusion that refers to your thesis statement).
