PRACTICAL ASSIGNMENT A (AC1.1, 1.2, 2.1, 2.2 & 2.3)
This is a group activity that will be formally assessed during the Workshop. You will be observed and assessed based upon your input in respect of research and analysis and demonstration of your understanding of the requirements of this report. Your individual participation in the overall group effort will also be assessed.
The group output will then be used individually as the basis for your report (Part B). You are required to PASS both parts of the assignment in order to achieve an overall PASS for this unit.
SCENARIO: You represent a firm of HR consultants. Your firm has been successful in the first stage of a bid to tender for work in support of an organisation anticipating the need for significant organisational change. The change will involve a restructure covering reporting lines (spans of control) as well changes to systems, work processes, policies, procedures and other organisational elements.
For this next stage of the bid, which, if you are successful, will lead to your firm being awarded the organisation redesign contract, you have been asked to inform the Senior Management Team (SMT) on the underpinning theory of Organisation design (OD). The SMT have little, if no idea about the concept. The CEO has asked you to provide them with as much information as they will need to enable your team of consultants to work with them effectively (if you are successful!)
The purpose of this assignment is for you to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding covering: A brief account of the historical and theoretical basis of organisation design with a comparison of two different organisation design models (AC 1.1) An explanation of the relationship between organisational elements, business strategy and organisation design (AC 1.2) An analysis of some of the key factors that influence organisation design (AC 2.1) A brief assessment of some of the implications of organisation design for work processes, productivity and the workforce (2.2) A brief evaluation of the linkages between organisation design and people management and development strategies (AC 2.3)
The organisation (context) Founded in 1996 by Agatha Rostik, The Body Image International plc, known as ‘Body Image’, has 2,400 stores in 61 countries, and is one of the largest cosmetic franchise organisations in the world. The ‘Body Image’ is headquartered in Dubai and is now part of the L’Oréal corporate group.
The ‘Body Image’ International plc is a global manufacturer and retailer of naturally‐inspired, ethically‐ produced beauty and cosmetics products.

‘Body Image’ went public in 2002. Leading up to its takeover by L’Oreal  (In March 2003, L’Oreal acquired The ‘Body Image’ International cosmetic brand revered for its ethical values for $ 1.1 billion), the ‘Body Image’ International plc was a high quality skin and body care retailer operating in 52 markets with 2,045 stores, spanning 25 languages and 12 time zones. They had one of the most recognisable brands in the world and established a reputation as a socially and environmentally responsible company. The ‘Body Image’ is listed on the Dubai Stock Exchange. Total retail sales in 2014/2015 across all The Body Shop outlets amounted to $708.7 million (2013: $672.5 million). Group turnover was $419 million, up 10 % from the previous year, and profit before tax increased by 21% to $34.5 million. The business consisted of a combination of company‐owned and franchised markets, and a developing multi‐channel service with a direct selling organization – ‘Body Image’ at Home and online retail in GCC region. At that time the company employed 6,788 people directly, with approximately 14,000 additional employees working within the franchise network and as consultants in ‘Body Image’ at Home and online retail in the GCC.
Note The contextual details are included simply to provide as scenario. Your preparatory research and subsequent presentation should draw upon the scenario as appropriate – but your primary focus should be on the theory and practice of Organisation Design.
Your practical assignment should be supported by the documents listed on the checklist, which should be delivered by you, individually, to your trainer for checking. You should produce your presentation in PowerPoint lasting approximately 45 minutes. You should transfer electronic copy of the PowerPoint to your trainer on completion of the practical assessment. You will also need to update your CPD Record based upon a reflection of your learning experience.Please also comment on how you will transfer the new knowledge and skills gained during this assignment into working practices. You may also use this reflection for your CPD’.
