Part 1:  The Rediscovery of Crime Victims and the Role of Social Movements

Pursuant to your textbook, explain what the “rediscovery of crime victims” means.   Discuss the three social movements that highly contributed to the rediscovery of victims – explain what the 3 movements are, what victims they helped rediscover, and how they contributed to the rediscovery process for those victims.  

Part 2:  The News Media’s Role

Pursuant to your textbook, explain the role the news media plays concerning the plight of victims and the rediscovery of victims. Provide both negative and positive aspects. Argue that the rediscovery of victims by the news media, elected officials and commercial enterprise is a “mixed blessing.” Fully explain how it can help and also how it can be harmful to victims (this should be done objectively).

• In your opinion, does the good (rediscovery/attention) outweigh the bad (potential for exploitation)? Are victim’s exploited by the media and by commercial enterprise? Explain.
• Reflect upon on the examples of rediscovered victims we discussed in the text and powerpoint (for example, the text and power point talked about recently discovered victims with the help of the media – road rage, violence against women, hate crimes, bullying, human trafficking). Give your thoughts/reflections/reactions to the videos in the power point relative to these issues: These include:   Violence Against Women campaign – ItsOnUS (Grammys), 2 Anti-bullying videos (There’s More Than One Way to Handle a Bully and A Teacher Read His Class a Suicide Note From Far Away), Human Trafficking video: “Here Are Some Secrets About an Industry That Nobody Wants to Talk About”

Finally, give an example of  recently rediscovered victims or situations where the media helped or exploited victims.
